Hey I was thinking...(and that's not something I DO often!) I got to thinking about different state carry laws and I realized that I know NOTHING about other states. I mean I know my state laws (CT) inside and out, and I kinda know local states (in New England there are many local other states!). But I couldn't for the life of me tell ya what it's like to try to CCW in Idaho or Kansas!
I thought it might be fun if we were to grade our state and give reasons for other members, so here go's!!!
"May issue" state that acts like a "Shall issue" +
No waiting period after obtaining permit. +
Must have permit to buy handgun. -
No monthly limit as to how many guns one can buy. +
No open carry. -/+ debatable
LOTS o' forms for each purchase including model# serial# etc. -
No AK types -!
Zero reciprocity with bordering states -
Over all, because of this, I would give CT a C+
Not too shabby but certianly no vermont!
Anyone else want to play?
How about checking out the evil Brady state rating and reversing it?
Brady gives PA a D+ so from a 2A supporter point of view that would be a B-
There are over 550 million firearms in worldwide circulation. That's one firearm for every twelve people on the planet. The only question is: How do we arm the other 11? (Yuri Orlov [Nicolas Cage] Lord of War)
The attitudes of those in the more restrictive states is so foreign to me and my way of thinking.
For instance...to me anything less than SHALL issues sucks.
The only waiting period I'll ever accept is the one at the checkout counter when I'm standing in line waiting to pay for my new assault weapon.
A permit to buy a handgun.?
No way. Anybody that thinks that they need to regulate who buys what and when and where needs to be taken out to the town square and publicly beaten.
I dont feel like I need permission to buy a legal item with my own money.
Personally, I have no problem with open carry. Perhaps in this great society of ours people would show more respect if everyone carried.
AK types ? Yeah....I like em. Every time some socialist politician pees on himself because he wakes up and realizes that "average" Joe can buy one in most states makes me want to go out and buy another.
Reciprocity with surrounding states. Since I have kinfolk in Missouri,Tennessee,Oklahoma and Texas, its rather nice not to have to disarm every time I cross the border and submit my personal defense to some LEO that wont be there till after the fact.
Fact of the matter is...I dont even like the idea of a permit to carry. Why should I have to get a permit to exercise a right that is part of the Constitution of this land? It dosent make sense to me...except as another "control" scheme.
With that being said, in comparison to other states, I'll rate Arkansas as a C+. Could be better or it could be worse...
I want to have a job where the is no accountability,a job where I can do as I dang well please and make my own laws and act like a KING. I want to be on the Supreme Court.
AR. CHL Instr. 07/02 FFL
Like custom guns and stuff? Check this out...
Cannot carry in a resturant that serves booze, even if not drinking. Other than that it is damn near perfect!

I mean what grade could you give except an A+++ for the state that STARTED the "SHALL ISSUE" carry permit movement AND who started the Amended Castle Doctrine craze. Nothin' I don't like about the gun laws in this state. We even have reciprocity with every state I might wish to visit on vacation. Well one thing....the Constitution was changed to allow individual counties to mount stronger rules as long as they didn't BAN anything. Hence liberal-land (Miami Dade County) where I live has done some stupid things...

Shall Issue ++++
Open carry with or without permit (I like having the option) +
One handgun a month (without a permit) -
No limit on handgun with permit +
Permits only authorize handguns -
No CCW in places that serve alcohol -
Can open carry in places that serve alcohol (at least we can carry) +
No waiting periods +
Full preemption ++++
Permit honored by 21 other states +
Pisses off Bloomberg +++++++++++++++
No approved weapons list. They're all OK +
No restrictions on magazine capacity (this means absolutely nothing to us 1911 guys, but it means a lot to guys with lesser weapons) ++
"You can get more with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone." - Al Capone
The second amendment is the reset button of our Constitution.
Shall Issue state with statutes in place to prevent counties from abusing "delays"
OC legal without a permit.
Cannot CC in establishment with liquor license, must OC.
One Gun-A-Month law, CC holders exempted.
Reciprocity agreements with 21 states
No ridiculous clinging to the defunct AWB, like MA and CA and several others.
No gun registration, can CCW anything you own - don't have to have serial number and model printed on your CHL.
Damn, P8riot beat me to it.
There are only two states that I know of that would get an A from me and that is Vermont and Alaska. That being said I give Texas pretty high marks other than the fact that they make me get a license to do something that the United States Constitution guarantees my right to do.
Texas is a Shall Issue State +
Texas allows anyone that can legally own a firearm to carry in their car while traveling ++
Texas recognizes 40 other states CC Permits +
Texas CHLs are recognized by 30 other states +
Can not carry in Schools, Courthouses, Bars that do 51% income from Alcohol, Sporting events, large amusement parks. -
Katrina Law +
Strong Premtion Law (cities can not regulate gun laws) +
No waiting period +
No limit to buy guns +
Castle Doctrine +
Parking Lot bill is pending +
No open carry. -/+ debatable
if parking lot bill does not pass -
Allows private property to post 30.06 to legally keep CC out but 30.06 is big and ugly +
I give Texas a B+

If it is not in the US Constitution then the Federal Government should not be doing it.

I'm glad Blooming Idiot is pissed!
If I recall correctly, you are limited to magazines that carry 20 or less. So maybe A- is closer. I guess I'm not to upset with the magazine limit.......it's hard to conceal those Glock 30 rounders. No restrictions on magazine capacity (this means absolutely nothing to us 1911 guys, but it means a lot to guys with lesser weapons) ++

I beg to differ. VA law defines any weapon having a magazine capacity greater than 20 to be an assault weapon, but does not prohibit it.
Washington State B+. No schools, or colleges ETC. I have a problem with that. Also no jails court rooms taverns or mental institutions. I don't have a problem with that.
