Tennessee firearms Legislative Update

Lots of pro gun laws in the works here in Tennessee. I just got my email with them all listed from the TFA (Tennessee Firearms Association).

Here is one that I would like to ask all of you about. Here is the text of the proposed bill:

Now, what exactly does the phrase "With the intent to go armed" mean? Isn't that what we are all doing every day? I mean I do not know about all of you but I leave the house everyday with the intent to go out there well armed. And I do.

This is just my shot at it, but if you're carrying in a briefcase, bag, or directly on your person lawfully as a matter of habit, and at some point enter a place (airport?) where carry is unlawful, having truly forgotten about the firearm, then you lack intent.

In short, the State has to prove intentional unlawful possession. That's not a bad thing for all us common folks (if you're in Tennessee).

It's also a good thing that the worst-case scenario is only a misdemeanor. Here in Florida we're creating new felonies at an uncontrollable pace. Here's our situation as it stands now:

Florida Statute 790.01(2): A person who carries a concealed firearm on or about his or her person commits a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084. (Doesn't apply to lawful concealed carry permit holders).

Have you heard anymore about the repeal of the law prohibiting carrying handguns on recreational property and parks and playgrounds.

Self-defense bill passes both houses

The Tennessee bills will soon go to Gov. Phil Bredesen, who can sign them into law, veto them or let them be come law without his signature.
