    The Day We Converted

I woke up one morning and got ready for work, just a typical day at the homestead. I usually left for work quietly as not to disturb my wife. She needs her beauty sleep, and can be quite cranky if disturbed. Our front door had three locks, a knob lock, a dead-bolt that could be opened from either-side, and an inside-only dead bolt. I normally locked the knob lock on the way out, and the either-side deadbolt from the outside. This morning for some reason I can’t explain, I woke my wife up (not recommended) and asked her to lock me out from the inside too. She did, but wasn’t real happy about it.

A few hours later my wife calls me at work. She said “good news honey” the police department just called. They found the keys you lost a month ago, and they are bringing them over. She said they traced our address from the P.O. Box key, and will be here soon.

(Yes, I had lost my keys a month or so ago, but I thought they were around the house somewhere. What I never imagined was that my wife had dropped them from my pants at the laundry mat, and someone had picked them up and followed her home.)

While I was on the phone, I heard a knock on the door. She says they’re here and starts to trot off to open the door. I yelled so loud, my co-workers thought I had gone nuts… “Wait, look out the window and make sure it is a police car”. I am so thankful she heard me, and looked first. She said no, it’s a blue Ford Escort, and I told her to call 911, and I am on my way.

I am also thankful to have made the drive unseen by our local police, as I am sure they wouldn’t have liked any excuse for the speeds I was going.

Anyway, he was gone by the time I got there. And while I was on my way, he had unlocked both the outside knob lock, and the either-side deadbolt. The only thing that prevented him from getting inside to my wife and two daughters was the inside-only deadbolt. I shudder to think what could have happened that day, and always add a few extra thanks when I count my Lucky Stars, even to this day.

Of course we called the real police, who took a report. They never found the guy, and didn’t seem really too interested in it. I bought a gun the next day. That was about ten years ago, and since then we have added quite a few to our collection. My wife now carries a S&W 642 Airweight, in her purse or fanny pack.

I hope we never experience anything like that again, but am somewhat comforted in the preparedness it has motivated.

Someday the wolf may knock at our door again, but this time Little Red Riding Hood has a gun!

Glad everything turned out ok in the end...but make sure you're wife doesn't hear you call her little piggy ...that could end badly!

And you've changed all the locks I hope? Or did the bg drop the keys?

That was a close call, and a frightening one. What's up with the dirtbag population passing themselves off as police officers nowdays?

Funny you ask, because I wouldn't have expected him to drop the keys, but he did.

My wife didn't feel comfortable there anymore, especially after we found out he had been inside our house while we were out. It was just too personal for her.

Our landlord changed the locks that day, but ultimately moving was the only solution.

    For me Lessons Learned:

    1. If you lose your keys, find them or change the locks immediately.

    2. Always have an inside only deadbolt too.

    3. Never leave your family helpless.

I'm thankful I didn't have to learn them the hard way.

Glad you lived in the brick house instead of the straw or stick one. Happy things turned out well.

Glad everyone is fine. Now you need to either change the locks or have them re-keyed. Changing the locks is not difficult. Re-keying them could require a locksmith. Both are worth the price. Also a panic alarm might be a good idea as well. The panic alarm would go to the local law enforcement agency or sound a siren at the location. I recommend the silent type that way the cops can get there hopefully before the BG leaves and they can catch him. Some like the idea of the siren chasing them away immediately. The choice is yours. Take care of yourself and your family.
