    Another Lawyer Thread

Did ya hear the one about the lawyer who....? Oh, wait, that's another forum.

I just received my membership packet from the Second Amendment Foundation (http://www.saf.org/).

The reverse side of the wallet card states: "This card certifies that the holder is a Member in good standing of the Second Amendment Foundation and is entitled to unlimited use of its Attorney Referral Service (425-454-7012) for litigation involving gun rights".

Has anybody had any experience with this service? What do y'all think? I assume that "litigation involving gun rights" would include self defense with a firearm.

An SAF membership costs only $30.00 per year. That's pretty cheap, especially if it includes a lawyer.

If I'm reading that right, I would guess it means that they'll refer you to a good pro-gun attorney in the event you ever need one. Sadly I doubt they'll pick up the tab, but at least you know you've got a good lawyer on your side should you ever need one.

Well, it includes referral. That means you can be referred, or look up via a list yourself, but it doesn't mean the referred lawyer (or even the next 50 referred) will be a good one. That service almost certainly doesn't include picking up the tab for a legal defense.

Best bet is to select your attorney in advance, for specific cause, by virtue of that attorney meeting your specific requirements, and perhaps to have that attorney on retainer so that a specific relationship is established. I'd much prefer that a given attorney know me and my philosophy of life, self-defense and use of force, as opposed to being palmed off to the first person on some list. For example: previously having been a judge; having a long (10+ yrs) and successful practice in defending people in situations of justifiable self-defense, with the emphasis being on "successful," not merely "practice"; specifically knowledgable about my own state's use-of-force laws, as well as those neighboring states to where I travel; specifically pro-gun, but more importantly pro-life (my GG life) in philosophy. Doesn't match my criteria? "Next."

I used a list of lawyers I found on this forum to find a good 2A lawyer. I've already met him and he's a big advocate... a good guy to have already met BEFORE, God forbid, something happened.

    Clarification

I didn't mean to imply that SAF would pay for an attorney. My last comment should have said: "That's pretty cheap, especially if it includes access to a lawyer".

Well, it includes referral. That means you can be referred, or look up via a list yourself, but it doesn't mean the referred lawyer (or even the next 50 referred) will be a good one. That service almost certainly doesn't include picking up the tab for a legal defense.
I'm quite aware of the meaning of the word "referral". I figured that a gun-rights organization like SAF would refer its members to an attorney specializing, or at least highly knowledgeable in, gun laws, as opposed to a personal injury or worker's comp lawyer. I wouldn't ask the NRA to recommend a divorce attorney.

I thought, mistakenly, this would be a good topic for discussion. Apparently not, judging from some of the smart-aleck comments.

Although, you could probably get a good divorce lawyer from the NRA

i don't think that the $30 includes actual attorneys services, but only use of their referral service, ie, they will refer you to an attorney.

Nice to hear that you used the Forum Attorney List and found a good 2A attorney. We were hoping that it would prove to be a valuable resource for some members.
