Yet another reason for campus carry..
When I was talking to my parents about my ND, I was told directly, with a straight face, that "I don't care what happened at Virginia Tech, it's not going to happen at UC" by my father. They don't want handguns in the house, but they've got no problem with rifles or shotguns (that makes...no sense).
Today I got this notice via email:
Date: Sun, 27 May 2007 16:50:36 -0400
From:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Subject: [SAFETYNOTICE] Details Released on Shots Fired Incident at Calhoun Hall
To: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
To: University of Cincinnati Community
From: Lt. Col. xxxxx xxxx
University of Cincinnati Police
At approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 27, University of Cincinnati Police received calls that shots had been fired in Calhoun Hall Lobby. The preliminary investigation shows that four shots were fired near the breezeway doors and north patio. There were no reported injuries. At this time, the shooting is believed to be the end result of confrontations between two groups known to each other. These groups consisted of both students and non-students. All subjects fled the scene. The police were able to make contact with one subject later in the morning. Though we have multiple leads, no arrests have yet been made in the case.
The police are continuing to investigate the shooting and will have an officer stationed in Calhoun Hall through at least the remainder of the day Sunday. If you have any information on the shooting, please call the University of Cincinnati Police at 556-4907 or call the anonymous tip line at 556-COPS.

Ironically, I was in Calhoun Hall today (Sunday), and didn't see a single police officer

Yea, I'm not sure why people have a false sense of safety and beleive that it would "never happen here" No offense ment to your father.
I am a firm believer that "gun free" zones just create safe havens for people who want to shoot others. I am all for concealing on campus. Although, the fact that I am not a student right now makes things much easier for me to carry. I'm not sure what I would do if I was told I couldn't carry on campus, or even leave my gun in my vehicle.

Only issue with me is it's a legal problem, not a policy problem, if I carry on campus. A big one.

What I do about gun free zones cannot be said publicly here.

A false sense of security can get people killed, when it comes to having zero ability to defend yourself.
Definitely be sure to post what your father's response is, to knowing it happened exactly where he said it couldn't. Ask him whether he still thinks your being disarmed, personally, means that you'll be more or less likely to be stuck there with nothing but your socks in your hands.

I can see it now when I get home:
"But nobody got killed"
It wasn't that far away from happening, and it was in a DORM.
Next time somebody probably will be killed.

Our state University LE Cheifs all testified that they had addressed all the issues learned from Va Tech incident and apposed the Campus Carry bill...
And... not one thing has been done at any of those institutions outside of forming a committee...
Why? Because they can't do it. They know it. Didn't stop them from running their mouths about it though. I hold them now doubly responsible for anything that happens. Thats what happens when you interject yourself into the politics of it all rather than keeping your mouth shut. You take on more liability.... fair warning... you words will be printed again and unfortunately PROBABLY used against you.
What they should have said was "I don't write the laws, I just enforce them" and left it at that. Smarter thing to say...

It is that head in the sand thing, it works just great.

A few $100M+ lawsuits that destroy a few universities is, I fear, what it's going to take to force a wake-up call. The murder of 32 victims at VTech surely hasn't done it.
Yes. Double responsible, now that the wool has been pulled from the eyes. Stupid, lunatic administrations. In exchange for an education, they (in general) take your ability to defend yourself, don't take responsibility for your protection, then go after you if you do choose to take up your own defense. That is criminal.

As a Virginia Tech student I really hope that someone learns from what happened.
Unfortunately, I don't believe anything is going to change.

I would be interested to hear what the family says after this.

My jaw dropped when I got home.
"We read it, but no handguns in our house. When you get your own place fine, but not here."
I'm going to ask my buddy who rents out homes if he has anything come summer time, and if he'll cut me a break by helping collect rent and maintain what I can while in school.
If my own parents are going to have that attitude about a CCW holder due to one negligent discharge towards their son (and ALL of my friends, who all have CCW licenses), screw it (ironically, one of my instructor's assistants had one a week exactly after mine, took out the instructor's water heater). It's my responsibility to find a joint of my own then, and my responsibility to find another handgun when the funds are there (I have to sell mine now to be able to afford college, but I also haven't worked since fall quarter began, my fault on that one).
If anybody wants some poster adults for sheep who live with a sheepdog, it's my parents. Fine with rifles and shotguns, but not handguns. "No, we don't care if a 12 gauge slug is capable of 2,000+ ft-lbs at the muzzle, but your .40 handgun that MIGHT get 440 ft-lbs was never welcome here!" And yes, they think that card access doors and security cameras will stop the violence/crime on campus. Newsflash, but it won't. When our buildings get tagged with "kill whitie die" where we get all our food and guns go bang in the night, no chance in hell.

Some people have to be hit between the eyes before they will see what is going on around them. Some people walk around with blinders on in their owm private perfect world. Some of our tourist here in orlando are like this. They leave their door open at the motel or hotel and then they wonder why they get robbed.

The scarry part is that this happened less than 800 feet from where I spend a majority of my days. My parent's didn't care one bit. That's the part that scared me.
I'm REALLY thinking about just getting a Kel-Tec and pocket carry, and not telling a soul. Disrespecting their wishes, yes, but it may very well save my life.
I'm liking the PF9, but it might be a bit big for pocket carry (I wear jeans nearly 365 days a year). However, a .380 is better than throwing my backpack.
