SOUTH FAIRMOUNT -- Cincinnati police are investigating a shooting incident that occurred around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Officers were called to a United Dairy Farmers store after the clerk said someone stole ice cream from the store.

"He was running like he had a bag of money. I didn't know what he was holding. I didn't know it was ice cream," one witness said.

As officers arrived, they said, the suspect came back to the store for a spoon and was detained. While searching the man, police said, he took off running, pulled out a gun and opened fire as he ran.

"He turned back and started popping and turned his gun at the officer and shot two shots," the witness said.

Police Chief Tom Streicher said four officers returned fire at some point in the foot pursuit, and the suspect was hit at least once.

Officials said the suspect collapsed in the middle of Queen City Avenue. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Queen City Avenue at Grand Avenue was closed while police search the crime scene for evidence.

Many witnesses were in the area at the time and they are being questioned by police.

Several restaurants along Queen City Avenue in the area also had to be cleared out.

The suspect's name has not been released.

"Ice cream? You know, all that for some ice cream? It's just silly," Mar Thomas said.

Ice Cream Theft Leads To Fatal Shootout With Police
He wasn't killed trying to get a spoon. He was stopped while attempting to murder a police officer, as these alternative headlines would have shown:
    • Attempted Murderer's Actions Stopped In The Nick O' Time, or
    • Attempted Murder Leads To Being Stopped By Police, or
    • Police Fired Upon; Dangerous Felon Stopped.

Stopped cold. Put on ice, really. Pass the spoon ...

Sometimes, even apparently-innocent phraseology can show the left-leanings of the popular press. The headline really should reflect the simplicity of the facts, instead of the bias of the news organization.

I like my Blue Bell as much as the next guy, but not enough to steal it and shoot at the cops in the process.

I agree on that 100% Michael - tell it like it is and don't put twisted spin on the story. Shoot at cops - expect to have return fire - simple.

I like that headline, we should see more like that, well except that it would mean that more people were shooting at Police Officers which we really don't need.

Firing a couple of shots at people, either police or civilians, is not "just the ice cream".

Funny part of this whole story is the ice cream, now evidence, was stolen once again after the shooting. Someone stole the stolen ice cream from a dead man...
I was working when this happened, and heard it on the radio. I then heard the news report later. The way it was reported I thought for sure it was going to spark another riot. The headline was something like "CPD shoots suspect over ice cream"
