Rule One
All guns are always loaded.
Rule Two
Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
Rule Three
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target.
Rule Four
Be sure of your target. (Know what it is, what is in line with it, and what is behind it. Never shoot anything you have not positively identified.)
There is an old sticky of mine for the ''four rules''.
My own version is - ..
1) A gun is ALWAYS loaded (I don't care if it was just shown clear - it is treated as loaded)!
2) Do NOT point a gun at anything you do not wish to destroy.
3) Keep booger-picker of the bang switch until ready to shoot.
4) Know the target - AND what is beyond.
These are essentially ''it'' because others usually come in under this umbrella.
Not all agree with me but - I regard #2 as the final saving grace ... for if all else goes wrong, this one at least saves death and injury - egg on face being way preferable.

4. Be sure of your target and what is behind it. - Never shoot at sounds or a target you cannot positively identify. Know what is in line with the target and what is behind it (bullets are designed to go through things). Be aware of your surroundings whether on a range, in the woods, or in a potentially lethal conflict. "-from

Don't leave guns lying around for the kids to play with.
As well as the usual four rules, I always add one when I'm taking newbies to the range.
5) No bullet has ever missed. Ever.
I point out that although it may not hit what you want it to, it ALWAYS hits something.
Wow, more consistent than I thought.
Safety
The main safety device of a service weapon is as follows:
No mechanical device has a will of its own, and guns never go off unless someone causes them to do so. Guns are safe. It is people who are dangerous, and, conversely, the person holding the weapon is the primary safety.
Any mechanical safety device was made by MAN and man has not figured out how to make a device that will not break, so the main safety device is you!

1. Every gun is always loaded. ALWAYS!
2. NEVER EVER point a gun at anything you are NOT WILLING TO DESTROY! refer to rule one.
Then of course there are the others. I have always taught newbies ranging from children to adults that it is the unloaded weapon that kills. This hit all too close to me a couple of years ago when a friend of mine killed himself with an unloaded weapon.
That ties in nicely with another cardinal rule:Quote:

Its not elegent ... but the way i start any new person is ...
1. booger hook off the bang switch unless and untill on target .
2. The dammed thing is loaded , i dont care if and when god himself looked in the chamber .
The rest comes after basics of gun safety .
I haven't read any of the replies yet as this was on the main page of defensivecarry.com.. but here is my reply for our house and my little siblings follow them strictly. :)
#1 rule, the weapon is always considered loaded, even if it is TAKEN APART, it is still considered LOADED, therefore it is treated that way! Even though I store most arms here unloaded, I let them see me load them before I take them in their storage places and unload them without them seeing, so they also THINK they are loaded regardless.
#2 Is the safety remains on until the backstop is evaluated & weapon is pointing downrange. If the weapon doesn't have a safety, then the chamber stays empty until one is pointing downrange.
#3 is that the finger is ALWAYS off of the trigger until they are ready to fire the weapon at the intended target, and have evaluated the sitation (backstop, target, and that all others around them are BEHIND them completely (not off to the side or in front of them)!
