Finally managed to find a business who is anti-carry

I had to help my Mother take her car down to her favorite auto care center, and since all my cover garments were dirty, I open carried (legal in Alaska). I walked into their office with my t-shirt neatly tucked in, and my G19 in its holster on my belt. The guy at the desk didn't say anything directly to me, but when we got back home, my Mom got a call from the auto care place, and apparently the guy told her that it was Illegal to carry a firearm out in the open, and if there is a next time that I walk in there with a gun, he's going to call the cops. He told my Mom that it was "brandishing." I don't see how a gun in its holster is considered brandishing. I don't plan on walking in there with a gun concealed or unconcealed, anyway. I'm done doing business with them. If they won't allow me to carry, then they won't get to work on my car.

My Mother and I had a good argument over me carrying a firearm in public too.

Be sure to let the owner/manager know that they have lost your business, your family's business and why.

Might want to point them to the appropriate AK state laws, as well.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

Well the thing is, I'm still living at home because I am a college student. My parents love to do business with the auto care center that I just mentioned, but I won't do business with them due to their policy on carrying firearms. Actually I had made the decision not to do business with them long ago, because they couldn't seem to do anything right on my car.

Make sure you also tell them that you plan on letting all of your law abiding firearm owning friends know of his stance as well so that they do not make the mistake of giving him their business.

Fear seems to drive out what little common sense some people have left!

I think the more people realize that there are citizens carrying guns, the more signs we’re going to see too!

    Plus 1+ to Robere . . .

That guy is a coward to call your parents after you left. If he was uncomfortable, he could have even politely asked you to leave the gun at home next time.

I would send that guy a thank you card, letting him know that I was happy I didn't give him by business, and enclose a copy of the statute that informs him open carry is legal in AK

Definitely follow up with them. Fear of revenue loss may trump their fear of guns, and their lack of common sense.

...if they get snotty...tell them to fix your car or go to law school--because they don't seem to do either very well.

Agree with the above. You should contact them and let them know why you are not using them and that you are more than happy to pass it along to those who carry like yourself.

I know this stuff can be a pain at times and a hassle, but we need to make sure that the folks out there know how large a community of us there is. best of luck with your mom. I know mine still gives me a hard time about just owning firearms much less carrying them. Still don't let her know when I have it on me or not. Kind of a don't ask don't tell with her.

I have open carried in other places of business around town within the past few days, without any problems. I still recieved help from employees, and the transactions were just like any other I've made in the past. But like always, there will be maybe 1 or 2 businesses who want to make it easier for criminals to do what they do best.

And make sure you tell everyone you know. Might wanna post their name here (if allowable) so as not to patronize "disablers"

Look, I am firmly on the side of good guys carrying firearms for defense, but the issue of open carry is a hot one, to be sure.

It may be that a subjective fear (real or imagined) of revenue loss is the reason he wanted the gun kept away in the first place. Whether it's due to his own projection, or to actual truth, he may feel that other customers might be put off by being around a civilian with a handgun on display in a holster, and is trying to protect his business from losing the favor of non-gun people.

I have to add that if the reason that open carry was opted for was that it had been too long since the laundry was done, well... It doesn't seem very responsible to allow one's mode of carry to be dictated by not having appropriate cover garments ready. It's nearly like saying that you stuck your gun into your waistband because you'd left your holster somewhere else but you still wanted to carry that day.

Face it, we all know how the majority of people around react to open carry. Let's not lead with our chins, then. We can defend the principle of open carry to the hilt, later on. Let's work on getting concealed carry a bit more widely accepted before we shoot for that lofty goal, though.

I can understand a business being anti open carry. Rather we like it or not, there are always going to be people that are scared to death of guns. How would you have felt if the guy had come up to you and asked you to cover the gun? I dont open carry, but I would have no problem with that. Its not the same as having the place posted. They may just be concerened about how the other customers might feel about it.
Never the less, the guy should have had the guts to say something to you at the time.
