Fair Judge in Jefferson County New York

To make a very long story short, I was arrested in 1997 my senior year of college for some pranks that got a little out of hand. :frown:(What, like you never got busted in college) Any ways I was booked, bailed and embarrassed. The misdemeanor charges were later dropped and I was dismissed .:spankme: Almost 10 year later I applied for my NYS Pistol Permit. After waiting for weeks to meet the deputy sheriff for an interview which was going well until he brought up the incident in 97. Well it went side ways from there. It turns out he denied my permit application but was still obligated to submit the permit to the approving judge. The Judge called me asking for an interview, I went at his earliest convenience. After talking for about 45 minuets (only 20 of which were permit related) he saw that I have matured since the fall of 1997. I had a family and a great career in the Army. In his 10 years of approving pistol permits mine would be first to override the deputy sheriffs denial. With a sigh of relief and a firm handshake I left Judge Martowitz's office approved and finally vindicated from a past errors. :congrats:

Well this is my first post, I'm sure their a plenty of other CCW horror stories out there so please share. I hope to learn a lot from this forum.

If the charges were dropped did the deputy have a legal reason to deny you?

I just recently turned 21. Back when I was 17, I got ticketed for being at a party. They cited me for underage drinking and public intoxication, since I was outside.

Hoping this won't affect my ability to get a CCW. I guess thats all I can relate, but I'm not all that worried about it. lol

Just be glad you don't live in Mass.
A fist fight in school will get you denied. A drunk driving arrest is also reason for denial.

I'm sure he had a legal right to deny me. ( Just because he can )NY is not a shall issue state as far as i know. But ju st the fact that I was denied for somthing so stupid so long ago. I had forrgotten all about. I was blindsighted, all I could say was Uhhh, Ummm well, what happed was errr. I had forgoten all the details and did not want to apper to be tring to cover up or say anything that was not on the report. I felt as bad as the day of the arrest.

Dynamp55b I also did something stupid when I was about 18. Got arrested in RI. When we finally got to court 3 months later the judge threw it out and said stay clean in the state for a year and teh records would get destroyed. As far as I know that happened, had no problem getting a NJ firearms card nor a FL carry permit.

I didn't know the sheriff could be over ridden, I'm glad the judge had the sense to do it.

I'm glad that you have your license to carry now.
I sure also have done more than my fair share of dumb things when I was younger.
Never arrested though and no criminal record...just dumb crap.
