    Alaska and NICS

I read recently that an Alaska CHL can no longer by pass the NICS check when purchasing a gun.

    Is that true??

Are they going to be able to change that??

    Thanks

Don't know about Alaska, but FL changed their rules while ago, and even with a CCW permit, you have to do the background check each time you make a purchase, but you skip the waiting period.

I was not aware that any state permit allowed one to bypass the NICS check...just the waiting period!

In order for a state to be able to use a CPL in lieu of a NICS check, their background check has to be to Federal standards. Michigan finally qualified.

    Ditto in GA.

We just got that perk back again in July 2006. It went away for a while until GA added the NICS check to the GFL application process.

The CHL in Texas allows for the bypass of the NICS check. Its been almost 8 years since I have had to go through the NICS check:)

Are you sure about that?? I just went to the Fl. website & read the statutes. 790.065 still states that a holder of a CWL is exempt from the NICS check.

"However, if the person purchasing, or receiving delivery of, the firearm is a holder of a valid concealed weapons or firearms license pursuant to the provisions of s. 790.06 or holds an active certification from the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission as a "law enforcement officer," a "correctional officer," or a "correctional probation officer" as defined in s. 943.10(1), (2), (3), (6), (7), (8), or (9), the provisions of this subsection do not apply. AK has some who are exempt from the NICs check with a CCW permit, but others are not. No idea why.

Alaska recently, last year I think, went to "Vermont" style CCW, but kept their permit system for reciprocity purposes with other states.

A person holding an AK CWP can by-pass the NICS check, all others must submit to it.

currently a NV permit allows you to bypass the NICS check. but i believe that expires on October 1, 2007. the legislature didn't do whatever they needed to do this last session to ensure CCW holders are still exempt from NICS checks.

If my memory serves me correctly, any permit issued after June 2006, will have "NOT NICS EXEMPT" on it, and the permit holder will have to go through a NICS check prior to purchasing a firearm. Any permit issued before June 2006 that contains "NICS EXEMPT" will remain to be exempt from the NICS check.

My permit has "NOT NICS EXEMPT", which is no big deal. I have no problems with waiting a few extra minutes. That allows me to look around the store some more.

Thanks for the info, spyderdude. I stand corrected.

I think my NV permit allows skipping NICS, and my TX works at gunshows.
