Bob - I am a .40 greenhorn - it is the one cal (of the too many I have) which I have resisted. However, out of academic interest - I have wondered what makes the choice factor on bullet weight. A few guys doing IDPA seem to use/load 180's. Any thoughts? I am a GD fan, but have to admit, I don't even know if they do a 180 offering anyways!

I guess this is no different really from the 115, 124 and 147 choices in 9mm.

    Glock 21

Not actually on the night stand, but out of sight and within reach.

    Chris,

I have just always carried and shot the 165's. I have read that the 180's are a little more picky about loading than the lighter bullets. Since the Glock has the famed "unsupported chamber", I have read that the 180's increase the chances of a KB in the Glocks over the 165's and lighter bullets. Now this might all be internet myths, I don't know. I shoot a G35 in USPSA/IPSC, and buy the 165 grain Montana Gold bullets 2700/case. I go through 2 to 3 cases of the 40 bullets a year. Never had any problem with them, so that is just what I have always stuck with. A 165 grain MG bullet over 6.5 gr Unique gives me ~1100 fps from the G35.

I look at the 180's and compare them to the bullet weights in the other calibers like you pointed out:

    9mm - 115, 124/125, 147 grains
    40 - 135, 155, 165 and 180 ( some competition shooters are now using 200 grainers)
    45 - 185, 200, 230

I have always shot the mid weight bullets in each particular caliber.

Personal preference more than anything else.

Bob - thx for coming back on that.

I had (always do) forget that ''unsupported chamber'' deal and your logic makes total sense. Of course, guys who I know using 180's may well be reloading and downsizing the charge a tad for the IDPA.

I guess too, we could say ''compromize''!

As for 200's - heck, hadn't even thought of those! As I said - (age thing!?) - I have always favored heavy and slow - for many cals and loads. Just me maybe!

    Thx again - good shooting.

    CZ 40-P with M-3 light

My Springfield Champion 1911 used to be my nightstand gun until I got an M-3 light for my CZ 40-P. Now the CZ serves that purpose with a spare mag loaded beside it.

Bedside gun is a Kimber Custom and a Streamlight Scorpion. In the corner is a Mossberg 500 with shortened barrel.

4506 w/a 10 rd mag loaded with 185 JHP, spare mag, flashlight. Nothing else in the top drawer, ever.

My beloved has her 625-2 on her side. Couple of extra moonclips, too.

With the help of the furbearing alarm, anybody stupid enough to attempt to transit the 20 ft hallway toward the bedroom door is in for a very unpleasant journey.
