As discussed in other threads, I would like to know what stores you have come across that prohibit concealed carry. Maybe if we can use this as a resource in knowing which stores we choose to purchase from, as well as to know which stores need a kind letter or email suggesting they consider a safer policy within their stores.
My encounter was with IKEA. It was posted (albeit not legal). What stores have you seen the postings at?
I thought that someone was keeping a list somewhere online, but I haven't seen it in a while. I'm working on a web project right now that should go live in a few months and was thinking of keeping an updated version of anti-gun stores on it...with the possibility of users being able to add stores to the list themselves. Doesn't really answer your question but I think there might be a list out there somewhere.
Only one in my town that I've seen..(I've called and wrote a letter)...American General Financial..... I'm sure this place should be avoided rather you carry or not.
Lol - I never even thought about that...then again...I haven't been back to a theater in a few years except for one or two occasions (literally). Once I saw the last one I went to was posted, I contacted them about it and basically got the sheep runaround(Regal Cinemas) and haven't been back since. I went out and bought a decent HD compatible lcd projector and just wait for the flicks to come out on DVD. So between the projector and surround sound in the Living room, I effectively have my own theater with my own rules and have no need to give someone else my money.
BTW - for those considering it...IT's WELL WORTH IT to get your own projector and just wait for the DVD's. It more than paid for itself in a few months time (if you calculate how much you would have spent at the theater - outrageous ticket prices, food, drinks, snacks, etc...).
I'm going to start working on a new site myself to collect/gather information solely on posted places...I'll let you all know if I can actually bring it to fruition.
There's some "gray area" regarding the validity of these individual store prohibitions. As it was explained to me by the Attorney General's Office here in Kentucky...unless concealed carry is forbidden in a location by THE CONDITIONS OF YOUR PERMIT then you are NOT "breaking a law" by disregarding the store's [No CCW] sign. If you ARE discovered to be carrying a concealed weapon in a store that has prohibited weapons? The WORST they can do is ask you to leave. Their posted prohibitive notice has no legal "teeth".
But be careful. Circumstances vary WIDELY with location & general disposition of the local LE authorities. And lawyers (like good handguns) are NOT inexpensive.
It also varies greatly state-by-state. Some states, like VA and KY, do not give the signs any legal weight. Others require very specific sizing, graphics, and wording in order for the signs to have the weight of law behind them. Yet in others, a mere piece of looseleaf with "no guns" written on it in Sharpie counts.
In South Carolina a business that wants to prohibit CWP holders from bringing their firearms must post a very specific sign. The law mandates the size, color, wordage and graphics as well as proper placement. The upshot of this is that I have yet to see a legally posted place of business. My CWP instructor said that he has seen one sign that was actually legal but even then it could be ignored because not all public entrances were posted.
Another nice thing about the SC law is that the minimum size of the sign is larger than 8 1/2" by 11". This makes it more difficult for some business owner to just slap a sign up after an incident.
Well, I hadn't seen any other sites that were regularly updated by their users with new or updated info so I threw a site together this weekend. It's not much and is somewhat basic but it should get the job done fairly well...I hope. The forums where you can post posted carry establishments can be reached via the main page here: http://posted-places.com/
Check it out if you have time and let me know what you think. Is it worth the trouble? Are there enough folks interested to actually keep dumping new signs and correspondence? Did you run into problems?

I've been in Valu-vision several times over the past couple years and never noticed a no carry sign. Today I went in there to pick up my daughters contacs and there was a sign way off to the side of the front door sitting in a window that read something like "For the safety and protection of our customers concealed handguns and weapons are not allowed". I went in anyways. I figure the sign is for an insurance break or maybe just to make the anti's feel better.. They can only ask me to leave anyway, and if they do, I'm going to let them know it is not illegal to carry there because the sign is not even close to being up to state codes.
They have white letters on the glass next to the entry door stating "Weapons and Firearms Prohibited". That dog don't hunt in Texas. Simply states store policy (and poorly at that -- what's a "weapon" these days?), not a legal sign prohibiting licensed concealed carry. I went in and nobody noticed.
Suspect all Fry's have signs, since they started in Palo Alto, California. I never paid any attention during my 12 years there during which I spent bushels of money at various Fry's.
In most cases you could still carry in a store that posts a no gun sign without breaking any state laws. You might be asked to leave or you might be charged with trespassing.
I don't know why anyone would want to do business with a store that walks all over out 2nd Amendment in such a way. My advise would be to not do business with the store.
In MI signs mean nothing. If they ask you to leave then it is trespassing if you don't leave.
The one I had fun with is Value City furnature. They post a sign on the door of their stores, so I bought furnature from Art Van, copied the recipt and mailed it along with a no guns no money card to their main office in Ohio.
I've been hearing about a gun store in Searcy, AR, about 20 minutes from my house. They have a nice selection of guns and an indoor shooting range. Since the only two shooting ranges are about 45 minutes from my house I went to check it out. On the front door there is a sign that says no loaded firearms or CCL allowed. I turned around and put my XD in the truck and went inside. I walked up to the gun counter and asked why CCL wasn't allowed. He just stared my down, like I was some thug off the street, and said "owner's preference". I said well this was a wasted trip and he just chuckled and said why, I told him that I won't do business with a place that sells guns but will not allow CCL in their building and that there are plenty of other places that encourage CC. He just smiled and said alright. Then I left. It really stinks too, it looked like a nice store and it's closer to my house.
