I am interested to see amongst the CC members, just what spread of risk we individually perceive (actual or imagined).... and therefore also, the degree of counter -measures employed.
This is primarily to do with carry choices, frequency of same - and maybe too the required and used level of security (house, vehicle etc).
I consider myself fortunate - I live in a semi rural environment - in fact my county population is IIRC not much more than 50,000. I'd say risk on a scale of 1 thru 10 was possibly no worse than a 1 or 2 overall. That said, now and again quite significant events occur and so we are hardly Nirvana! I would be #6 in the poll.
Make your closest suitable pole vote and if you can, expand on your reasons for your perception and the rationale behind any and all defensive plans.
Rural dwelling - low risk Population of entire county is around 20,000. Two hours to a medium city. Low crime rate, but stuff does happen. Like most areas, I've seen it get worse over the past 20 years.
Rural Dweller - low risk. With that said it varies by day with contacts from work. I always sit with my back to the wall with good visibility in public places. I dont like suprises, unless its my birthday.
I try to avoid obvious combat zones in the nearby urban area and carry as much as possible given that my workplace is a CPZ as "S" can hit the fan anywhere.
I strive to maintain situational awarness at all times and always have alternate defensive means available.
The primary reason I carry as much as I do is more along the lines of rather have it and not need it any specific threat level. If I do percieve an increased threat level then the Mossberg or AR come out to play as well.
There's also the element of I carry because I can, and Citizens need to exercise their rights.
I live in a predomiantely Chech/German community of less than a thousand people. 75% are of retirement age or older. You know one of those "I don't even need to lock my doors when I leave the house" kind of places. The town itself is probably one of the safest places in my county to live. Unfortunately there are larger surrounding communities and small towns that are experiencing problems of the major metropolitan areas. Rapes are up, burgulary is up, drug busts are up, and lets not even talk about gang activity. Yes I live in a very rural community that I wish was like the Norman Rockwell vision of a great place to live or even the TV commercial about thr community of Perfect. I keep guns loaded and stored in safe places strategically around my home. I am never outside without a gun in my pocket. I never go anywhere without a gun in my pocket and another easily accessable in my car or truck. I even carry in church. I am constantly in condition yellow. I keep tabs on the number of times any strange vehicles pass my house. I look for strange faces in the local merchant shops. When traveling to some of the afore mentioned surrounding communities I go well armed and prepared for the worst. And I return home with a sigh of relief and a thorough inspection of my domicile prior to entering. Neurotic....mabey, sheeple...never. Funny....having grown up in a medium sized town that was fairly safe, all of this is natural to me. I pulled quite a bit of Shore Patrol duty in the Navy, worked as a bouncer for 10 years and had considered a carrer in law enforcement at one time.
Now after all that rambling I consider my threat level always high, no matter where I am. I am either checking out my wife's 6 or I am watching mine.
