Texas's new law (Guns in Cars) (MERGED)

Look's like Texan roads just got a little safer.

A bill that becomes law Sept. 1 allows law-abiding people to carry guns in their vehicles without a concealed handgun permit. House Bill 1815 passed unanimously in both houses of the Texas legislature, after which Governor Rick Perry signed it into law.

    Hope NC follows suit!

Louisiana considers your vehicle an extension of your home. You can have a gun concealed or in plain sight.

Georgia has a similar law. Must carry in open view - but they consider the glove compatment or console to meet the open view requirment. Big thing is no permit needed. But you must leave it in your auto when running your errands - so I hope the car is not broken into - instant gun vending machine.

IN Ky its legal if its in the glovebox. I just really wonder how much good this does. Once it's out of the glovebox, it's illegal. So its like you'd almost have to draw straight from the glovebox.

    KY

Robere, did KY do away with their "open carry" ? Years ago it was legal for KY residents to carry as long as it was in the open (on their person) and not concealed. Has that changed? I haven't lived there since 1977 but estranged family still lives there. I moved to Texas and just couldn't leave.

I'm shocked! Of all states - I thought Texas already had that one on the books. I had been told that if you are travelling overnight across county lines you could carry a handgun in your vehicle. Glad I never got stopped!

Old texas boy here, when I was a young man you could carry if you were traveling across three counties and carried money.

The old travelling law never said anything about crossing county lines. This old law was replaced in the last legislative session to allow the presumption that you were travelling given certain conditions that were easily met. Even with this new law, some DAs, for example in Harris County (Houston) still instructed police to arrest folks with guns in their cars and no CHL and then let the courts sort it out.

The most recent law should prevent this but we will see.
