    Mississippi Car Carry

Alright I have to drive to Florida from Arizona. I have my AZ permit (duh) and that's it. Mississippi is the only state I'm not covered in. What do I need to do to remain legal there? Preferably from someone in MS, please?

Handgunlaw.us just says its illegal to conceal without a license in the car. I construe that to mean "out of sight" - period. Can I just lock it up in my trunk and seperate the ammo from the firearm? I'm not terribly keen on guessing.

Here's the wording from MS Code
SEC. 97-37-1. Deadly weapons; carrying while concealed; use or attempt to use; penalties. ...
    2) It shall not be a violation of this section for any person over the age of eighteen (18) years to carry a firearm or deadly weapon concealed in whole or in part within the confines of his own home or his place of business, or any real property associated with his home or business or within any motor vehicle.

Also remember, Mississippi is not a "required to inform" state. If you do get stopped on the way through and are asked, (after they run your info and the computer pops up that you have a permit in AZ) advise that you are not carrying concealed at this time (put it in the console or glovebox). We would love for you to stop along the way, just leave it locked in the car. If you happen to encounter a 'less than knowledgeable' LEO, here's another bit of the MS Code that might help...
SEC. 97-37-9. Deadly weapons; defenses against indictment for carrying deadly weapon.

Any person indicted or charged for a violation of section 97-37-1 may show as a defense:

    (a) that he was threatened, and had good and sufficient reason to apprehend a serious attack from any enemy, and that he did so apprehend; or
    (b) that he was traveling and was not a tramp, or was setting out on a journey and was not a tramp;
I hope this helps and hope you have an UNeventful trip. Its funny how our state legislatures work sometimes--i can CC in AZ, but you can't here. Like I can't CC in AR, but we recognize their CHL--go figure.

Just curious... why would you have to travel through MO to get to FL... can't quite figure that out.

Thanks spydad. I think I'll do that. I've got a box I fly with complete with a bunch of MasterLocks. I'll just make it as secure as I possibly can and seperate it from myself.

    Yeah sorry, typo. It's Mississippi.

The OP was speaking of Mississippi, not Missouri.
Anti-gunners seem to believe that if we just pass enough laws, we can have utopia. Unfortunately, utopia is NOT one of our choices.

If I am reading the new laws correctly, MS CCW's can now carry concealed in AR. If I am wrong somebody enlighten me, please.

    Suggestion...

If you plan on going thru Hattiesburg, MS then Mobile, AL, I strongly suggest you take Hwy 63 off Hwy 98. It's a good 4 lane highway & avoids lots of slow traffic in Mobile. I always go that way when traveling to FL & it saves lots of time.

I'll have to check on that. I was going off of handgunlaw.us reciprocity map. They are typically up to date. Thanks for the heads up.
