This one happened about 5 blocks from where I work for the time being. A University of Memphis football player leaving his on campus apartment or dorm was shot to death lastnight at about 10pm.

Classes canceled for today and the campus was locked down lastnight.

Of course, if the man could have carried to protect his life, maybe he would be alive today. But, you guys all know that...

Read the story HERE if you want.

This was a big item on last night's news ....... almost sounds like a 'hit' rather than random but I haven't as yet gotten to dig for latest facts.

That is about 7 blocks from where I live. And you know that he would not be allowed to have a gun on campus or in campus housing.
The likelihood that he did have a gun is pretty high considering the crowd he ran with and the likelihood that this had something to do with drugs is, in my opinion, high also...just my opinion.
Hopefully, the security cams can give them some idea of who the shooter was.

So, the elementry school on campus, Campus School, less than a block from the dorm where the shooting took place, did not cancel classes today....go figure

I grew up in Midtown.

This is nothing new for Memphis. I lived at Cooper and Harbert, and Poplar and Auburndale. Not to far from UofM campus. My wife told me about it this morning.

You guys take care in Memphis. It is getting worse by the minute. I have friends there that are getting worried about just going to Fresh Market. Even to the coffee shops and sitting on the patio.

You can set on the patio at any coffee shop in Memphis...at your own risk!

Update

Since I work at WHBQ the station that I linked to in the original post, I sometimes get to hear updates on news stories early.

Seems that this young mans friends say he had around $3000 on him at the time of the shooting that they say he won at a casino in Tunica that night. So, the possible motive for this shooting was to rob him of his winnings.

We'll see what shakes out in the end.

Wonder where the money is?

It just is not safe anywhere in Memphis, thanks, in part, to the current form of government in the city,

I am so confused.....How could this happen.....It's a gun free zone........There aren't any guns on campus..........Someone please explain how someone could be shot in a gun free zone.

Ok, I am done being sarcastic......for the moment.

This fellow, just like all of us has a right to self-defense that the school takes away. Where is all the great protection these schools claim to afford it's students?

Here is what my school says about CCW:

B. Community.

“This City is what it is because our citizens are who they are.”

Plato

1. Endangerment. Violations of this policy include, but are not limited to:

Any act that directly or indirectly creates a substantial risk to the safety of a person or persons and/or the University community. This includes, but is not limited to, falsely reporting an emergency and/or engaging in the unauthorized possession, use, or alteration of any University-owned emergency or safety equipment.
Any possession and/or use of weapons, explosives, fireworks, or other objects designed and/or used to inflict injury or damage while on University premises, even if the student possesses a valid concealed weapons permit or other lawful permission to carry a weapon. This includes, but is not limited to, items which simulate such dangerous objects. The possession of non-lethal self-defense instruments (such as mace) is not prohibited; however, the reckless use of such devices may be considered a violation of this policy.

This is from the University of Denver Code of Conduct. Other lawful permission to carry a weapon would be an off-duty LEO. DU thinks they know best for the student population.

Day by day...this country is becoming more corrupt, filled with more lawlessness, and the Bad Guys are growing more bold...he who treads without a weapon, treads foolishly...:tumbleweed:

I know what's needed in all these places.................

BIGGER SIGNS!

cause obviously the gunmen didn't see them, otherwise they would've know they were in a gun-free zone
