I'm going to be a carry permit Instructors Assistant

I had an interview Sunday night at 6pm with the instructors at our local range and training facility, RangeUSA (http://www.rangeusa.com/) which went very well I thought. I guess they thought so too because I got the email when I got home last night after my daughters double header softball games (she had an outstanding couple of games by the way. She made a double play by herself, caught the ball in left field then ran the girl down running from second to third and tagged her out!). The email was to tell me that I was one of the people selected to be Instructors Assistants.

The position is not paid but it is a good way to get your foot in the door so to speak. We will help grade tests, set up targets, prep class rooms, get the students where they need to be and just generally help with anything the instructors needs. This is with the TN carry permit classes and the advanced handgun training courses.

Plus, we get free lane time, ammo at cost, guns at cost, big discounts on merchandise free advanced classes, and other perks! And, they say that if we want we can work towards becoming full instructors. That is what I am really interested in.

I am completely stoked about this and looking forward to it. I start a brand new job Monday with more money, a company truck and better hours, now this Instructors Assistant thing panned out for me.....I should probably go buy some lottery tickets before this lucky streak burns out.

Congrats to you and to your young lady! I know how much fun it is to watch a daughter compete and do a great job!

So, can you invite guests to help you with your free range time?

    Thumbs up

    Congratulations.
There are other ways to get richly rewarded that are not money.

    Yep, buy lottery tickets now!

And....this is a super nice plus.

I don't think so but I have not asked yet. I will be stopping in and talking to Scott in the next day or so.

Heck, I might do it today. If I give my boss my "2 week notice" today, I will immediately become unemployed. The network I work for has an interesting policy. If you leave one of the owned and operated stations such as this one to go to another station in the same market, when you give your 2 week notice they fire you on the spot. I don't understand it but that is their policy.

We had a fellow in my department give 2 weeks notice because he got offered a management position at 24. When they read the letter they made him gather his tools and had security escort him out of the building. They stood there and watched him until he drove off the property.

It's a weird place. I can't imagine why we have had over 15 people quit in the last 3 months.

Keep em dafe Mike and don't forget to do a little bit of name dropping...AKA DefensiveCarry.com.
Will do QK! I had already planned on telling students about the site.
By the way, I worked the TFA (Tennessee Firearms Association) booth at the recent Bartlett Celebration. It is a community festival, and during my 6 hours talking to people about our organization, I plugged the heck out or Defensivecarry.com. I told everyone I spoke to that if they wanted to look at a great site where they could ask any question, from beginner to advanced, the info they need could probably be found with one of the fine members here. Quite a few took the time to actually write the web site address down on the TFA pamphlet I handed them.

    Good for you Mike,

I'd do it for free lane time and ammo at cost.

I'd call that paid enough! I could burn through what comes out to $50/hour in discounts pretty easy! Congrats, have fun.

Heck, if they do that to someone who is considerate enough to give notice, just get your stuff together at the end of your last day, and hand the boss a letter of resignation on the way out, explaining why you didn't give notice. No sense giving them the pleasure of tossing you out the door.

I kinda got the same thing worked out. My local guy lets me come in and take about concelment issues and holsters and IWB and OWB. I get alot of questions and try to point people in the right direction. I also bring up this forum EVERY time I speak to a class. It's alot of fun for me. I maybe only 24 but, feel that I can at least point people the right way. I also have let a class or two shoot at my property when the local range is to packed.

Good going Mike. Instructing can be a lot of fun, but it can also be a huge pia. Its all what you make of it. Be careful, and I suggest you start growing eyes in the back of your head now, your going to need them once you start.

Mike, I noticed you said you start a brand new job Monday. I guess you will pack up and turn in your notice on Friday afternoon. Hey you said the new place wanted you right away. Looks like your company's stupid policy plays right into your hand. You got to love it when their stupidity works for you.

Congrats. Mike if you have never taught a class before you will find a great satisfaction in it. You walk away knowing you have helped people.

It is really a great feeling when you start seeing the same face in other classes, or when a new student comes up to you and says that XYZ highly recommended I come take your course. It is like being on cloud 9 for a short period of time.

I helped instruct way back in 1992 and loved it and I think I understand your "eyes in the back of your head" comment. I remember that when dealing with novice shooters, you must always be on the look out for the rookie mistake that may result in a gun shot wound. I used to wear a Kevlar vest when helping with the classes and may well do that again. I think I read somewhere that Massad Ayoob wears a vest when he is instructing. It's not a bad idea.
