The shop I bought my gun from offers a ccw class for half off when you buy a gun. $40 instead of $80. I am wondering if this class is going to get me closer to my permit, or its just a class he offers. Don't I have to take the FL state class anyway, regardless of knowledge?
I would assume this is the state class, but there is only one place that can answer this question for sure. Call up the shop and ask. Or heck, tell me the name of the joint and I'll call and ask for you.

The Gun shop is Florida Survivalist, in Dunedin, FL, I don't have a huge budget, so if I could save the $40 for a class thats not required for the permit, then that would be great. I understand their good intentions, being a new enthusiast, and I also understand that with every sale you must upsell. I'm doing alot of research on my permit, and am not sure yet if his class is going to be outside of my permit fund.

You might want to call around. Most shops offer the course.
I took mine in May for $50. $80 seems steep, but $40 isn't bad.
If they advertise that it is to get your CHL, you should be good to go,
after you get your fingerprints and fill out the info for the state. Oh yeah, and pay the money.

I don't know what they charge for the class these days, but when I took mine in their Casselberry store, it included the pictures and the application packet.
No matter what class you take, I would STRONGLY recommend you budget another $40 dollars for a copy of Jon Gutmacher's Florida Firearms Law, Use & Ownership. This is truly the definitive work on Florida's laws relating to owning, buying, selling, carrying and using firearms for self defense.

If you happen to be prior military, you've already met the requirements for training. Just submit copy of DD-214 with your CCW package.

I would call and ask them if the class is offered as the required training for the FL CCW license. The people offering the class would know if it qualifies to satisfy the requirement. Lots of different classes qualify, I'm pretty sure; and yes, if you have military training, that satisfies the requirement, according to what I've read.
I also second the suggestion that you obtain the Jon Gutmacher book "Florida Firearms Law." It's excellent. He keeps revising it as things change, too, so get as current a copy as you can. It's time for me to get another one, myself.
