Any experiences in getting states to allow shall-issue CCW

So, I understand that I live in the Socialist Republic of New Jersey...

but I was wondering if there was anyone around the forum who'd been around when their state finally went to shall-issue CCW (because it's almost impossible to get one here...)

I'm looking for suggestions on how the grassroots movements went about getting CCW made legal in your state.

    Thanks for the help...

Contact the NRA and the various associations in states that have recently passed CC bills. Also Wisconsin, and Kansas.

I believe it took us here in Minnesota about 7 years all told, if I am remembering correctly. It will help if you can get a couple lawyers on your side to donate a lot of time, and a lobbyiest who knows the inner workings of your legislature. You will need legislators from both houses to write comperable satutes to submit. Brace yourself for many delays, all kinds of back door politics that the average person doesn't even know exsists, and every anti in your state trying to block your efforts. You need to raise a ton of money and you need to get people out to vote. Those are the only things a politictian is concerned about. If you have the clout to vote them out of office, they will listen.

    GOOD LUCK!

Since antis like to have "victims of gun violence" to play the sympathy angle, you could use an army of women, handicapped, etc. to speak out for the cause - people who are likely to resort to a firearm for self-defense because they are more likely to be physically weaker against an aggressor. A lot of people dismiss the die-hard Second Amendment angle as "those crazy gun-nuts want to run around with evil black assault rifles." The antis use emotion for their side, so let's use it for ours. Gun owners are people just like everybody else; you've got to use the "we just want to defend ourselves and our loved ones" angle. Cops are great, but they can't protect 100% of the people 100% of the time.

    Hi firefighter4844,

I have listed a reference to Eugene Volokh who has a whole section on guncontrol to provide you with a reference. The other reference is from the NRA here in California, established in 1875. This will give you an idea of how far we in California have come since 1875 with the help of the NRA. Notice the use of the term sportsman, you see that alot these days, you know hunting etc. Hope this provides you with interesting reading and reference.

Eugene Volokh teaches free speech law, copyright law, the law of government and religion, and a

seminar on firearms regulation policy at UCLA Law School. Before coming to UCLA, he clerked for

Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the U.S. Supreme Court and for Judge Alex Kozinski on the U.S.

Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

    Missouri CCW

Missouri passed CCW a year ago. The entire process is well documented at: http://www.moccw.org, and there is a very well written account by one of the people personally involved in the process at http://www.john-ross.net/ccw03.htm

John Ross and Tim Oliver did as much as anyone in this fight. I have personally thanked both of them. (quick plug, John Ross's 'Unintended Consequences' is a _great_ Pro2A book!)

Good luck, and don't give up the fight to reclaim your rights!
Liberty is an inherently offensive lifestyle. Living in a free society guarantees that each one of us will see our most cherished principles and beliefs questioned and in some cases mocked. It's worth it.

Actually the best route it go get a group of like minded individuals in the same room and start a club whose goal is to fix this. Next is to get politically active, join the local (place favorite political affiliation here) go to their meetings, voice your opinions, and get to know them on a first name basis, volunteer to help them get elected to office. This will go a very long way to get things changed. We did this here in Michigan and yes it took several years and several elections to get things fixed but it works. When you walk into a room full of politicians and they say Hi and use your first name you know you have made serious inroads towards fixing things, they do listen to those who they know much more closely than some stranger sending them a e mail.

Firefighter - not sure if you belong to THR as a member but - there are some fine folks fighting tooth and nail to get shall issue thru in MD. Seems like a snowflake's chance in hell but OTOH they are working at it real hard.

Some names that come to mind who are folks maybe you could contact, are Spot77, Norton, Girlwithagun, EasternShore - there are others I forget right now. Their fight tho is or has to be - in the same league of ''mammoth proportions'' as that which might apply in NJ.

I am not sure about the history of shall issue in PA other than knowing it occurrred quite some time back - in fact before I was a proud resident of this state.

    Angry

States that aren't "shall issue", really don't want you to have a CCW License.

    Jim,

As I mentioned in the e-mail that I sent to you (and am repeating here for the benefit of other residents of NJ), the New Jersey Coalition for Self Defense was founded right after they passed the "smart gun" law.

When Sara's Million Toadies were touring the country in their Pink RV and were supposed to hold a rally in Trenton, we got the permits necessary to hold a counter rally. They moved their appearance to Newark.

We are currently working on a self defense firearms course, a self defense awareness program, and a community access television program. While these may not seem like efforts to make NJ "shall issue", we recognized from the start that before we can work on CCW among the sheeple that populate NJ, we need to raise their awareness of the role of self defense as it relates to things such as the duty of police (or lack thereof) to protect us.

We seem to have had many people come in who, I believe, were looking for some high profile activities, but weren't prepared for the long, hard, unacknowledged grind that faces those who want to change things. We are having a meeting on July 24 to decide where we go from here. What we need is people who are determined to make things change and willing to commit to that.
