I just found this video on CNN where they're interviewing a woman who holds "Taser Parties" to instruct women on using a Taser for self defense.
[edit: uh oh... can't figure out how to link to the video! Sorry. Can anyone help?]
So the woman they interview is an advocate for self defense; that's good.
But she's advocating that women use a ONE SHOT device that is severely limited in its utility. If one prong doesn't make it onto the target, or if it does but fails to penetrate clothing, the thing is useless.
Here's another laughable thing: the newscaster runs through the list of states where these Tasers are not legal: Hawaii, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Michigan, D.C., Wisconsin...
So, that's great. The same states where you pretty much can't carry a GUN for personal defense also prohibit you from using this "non-lethal alternative"! Unbelievable. If you live in the states that don't prohibit Tasers, chances are you could just carry a GUN!
Oh, and the model they demonstrate, she says, costs about $400!! For that you could easily get a used Glock or various other guns brand new! But instead, women should use a feeble defensive tool that has to be aimed and fired under stress and has ONE chance to work?!
It makes you wonder why a woman who is an advocate for women's personal defense would decline to be a GUN carry advocate, and instead advocate for this ridiculousness.
