    The Newhall Massacre

    I just finished reading Mas Ayoob's detailed account of this grisly incident in 1970 in Santa Clara County, Ca, in which 4 officers of the CHP were shot to death by 2 heavily armed thugs. Anyone who hasn't heard of this will be able to Google The Newhall Massacre, or better, read Mas Ayoob's accounting in The Ayoob Files. Of interest to me was that a civillian bystander who didn't even have a gun, witnessing the officers taking a beating, came to assist, picked up one of the fallen guns and scored the first hit against the bad guys and was later commended by the CHP for his part in this affair. Anyway, it is interesting reading and gave me something to do on a snowy day in Colorado.

    For those unfamiliar with this story a review of it can be found here via The Police Association of Tasmania;

    Edit: Please excuse the writing style of the report as related by Mas Ayoob which frankly at points comes across as bordering on comical if not juvenile.

    Ayoob writes in the style of Jack Webb - just the facts.
    Was a good read, if Gore & Fargo had waited for backup ...
    But that's a Monday morning quarterback call.

    "In the Gravest Extreme" is also good.

    My only complaint is that the (halftones) pics are muddy looking, I believe
    Ayoob has the books printed by a vanity press.

    When I went through a California local police academy in 1975 there was a rather complete presentation on it, including a color photo of the four deceased CHP officers lying side by side in their uniforms at the medical examiner's office. That one awful photo made more of an impression on us rookie officers than than anything else in training.

    I read the article. Sad day for the CHP. But they did learn from it.

    Not quite.

    Ayoob tends to add unnecessary adjectives and stirred 'drama' to his writings. This story as written is an excellent example of as much.
    It would be great if he just kept to the facts and wrote in a clinical style, such as an FBI sourced event report, but that is not how he does and I suspect it's because FBI reports don't make readers want to come back for more dramatic drivel in their readings.

    Point well taken. Still, it is a good read.
    If adjectives were outlawed, would nouns be half as interesting?

    Well, I see your point but that's part of his appeal. He's entertaining while presenting his accounting of the events. But you're right, readers wouldn't want to come back to read standard police affidavits. I rather like his style meself.
