Interesting things about crime and campus (U Cincy)

This is the time line I've found regarding gun crime and the University of Cincinnati, it's students, and a few blocks off of campus in about 1/2 an hour. The 6 of 2007 I can't remember the exact date.

12/11/07 Student robbed at gunpoint and ordered on ground blocks away from campus and police patrol
    11/30/07 Student shot in leg
9/27/07 2 Students robbed at gunpoint in Corryville
6 of 2007 Shots fired on Calhoun dorm porch
4/10/07 Student robbed in parking garage at gunpoint - later determined bb gun
11/20/06 News Record publishes assault in campus green
4/21/05 News Record Poll shows 74% don't feel safe on campus
4/20/05 News Record publishes student shot in stomach

Now, let's take a look at the crime figures according to UCPD. Keep in mind that the 2007 stats are only good till Oct 2007 while the 2006 rates are the complete year.

    2006 Part 1 Crime(1st number) 2007 Part 1(2nd number)
    Raymond Walters 9 13
    East Campus 74 45
    West Campus 368 353
    Clermont 6 5
Total-41 incident drop in Part 1 crime, complete 2006 data to 1/07-10/07 data.

Now, taking the numbers from 2006, dividing by 12, and then multiplying by 10 we have this (same positions for the years). The 2007 Number hasn't been altered, as it is for 10 months.
    Raymond Walters 7.5 13
    East Campus 61.66666667 45
    West Campus 306.6666667 353
    Clermont 5 5
Total-35.9 incident gain in Part 1 crime, 10 month 2006 average to 1/07-10/07 data.

Keep in mind that they're telling us crime is going DOWN. Well, it is if you leave out over a month of data for 2007 - which is the latest they have on their website.

Cincinnati PD District 5 had 457 part 1's in 2005, 485 in 2006, and 401 to the end of October in 2007. Raw numbers, there was a gain of 28 more from 05 to 06, and a drop of 84 from 06 to 07. If you do a 10 month average on 2006, you now have 404 part 1's, only 3 more than 2007's 10 month tally.

So, in short, crime is really just as bad as it was last year, if not worse. The frequency of gun related violent crime is increasing both on campus, and around campus (affecting students). License holders still can NOT carry on college campuses.

I'm still dumbfounded by the politicians and administrations.

The UC campus is surrounded by garbage, and the campus is an open one. People have to travel through to get to one neighborhood to the next.
UC police have some good guys, but they are not set up to handle the type of stuff the have to deal with. They are set up to be typical campus police without being surrounded by a war zone.
The U.C admin refuses to admit that they have a crime problem... after all, its about the dollar and nothing else.

My wife is starting at UC in January. She's 25, 5'4", 115 soaking wet. A prime target for some scum, I'm sure.

Luckily, she is fairly pro-gun. She's been to the range a few times with me, and she is now signed up for a basic pistol class, as well as in the market for a pistol of her own.

I've been leaning on her (ever so gently) to think about getting a concealed carry permit, and she's pretty open to the idea.

The above stats are just another reason to help her get squared away.

I went to the Univ of Cincinnati from 2001-2004. All of the events below happened on campus or within a 5 block walk to myself or a friend:

from my dorm room window - saw someone shooting in the air in a huge party on campus quad at 2 am. Campus police drove through the crowd with the siren to break everyone up, but didn't get out. more than 200 people.

Attempted break in in my house: I woke up at 1 am to someone trying to kick in the kitchen door. I initially thought it was one of my stupid roommates loosing their key. I grabbed the phone and turned on all the lights. Thankfully the lock held...they left after seeing the lights.

house was broken into during the summer when I was away (stupid roommates left ground floor street window open all night!)

friend and her roommates were robbed at gunpoint on their porch

My bank was robbed at gunpoint twice.

friend had apartment ransacked and pillowcases full of electronics and stuff stolen.

friend had many thousand of dollar musical instrument stolen

Campus police (and the Univ administration) were absent at best, at worst negligent. I think it was a real problem that campus police and regular Cincinnati police didn't coordinate well. The campus police would not even talk to you if you weren't standing on campus. The Cincinnati police thought, "its by the univ with mostly students so they can handle it" The result, the 911 operators didn't know who to assign calls to!

don't live with stupid, drunk roommates who have no head on their shoulder and expect to be safe.

SixTo and lacrosse, I'm working on changing that....slowly but surely.

I'm going to finish up a letter to the state reps, media outlets, UC's administration, and Ohio's pro-carry groups. If anybody (including nutz4utwo, I hope they do this) can personally relate to any crime on campus that affected them, PLEASE PM/EMAIL ME with what happened, when it happened, and your actual name (I won't publish your name, it is simply to as references). Stats and numbers can only do so much, and people's minds are only changed by pulling their heart strings now-a-days.

That was my old stomping grounds. I visited that area 2 years ago. I would not be caught anywhere in the Clifton/UC area without carrying now. It never has been a "safe" area and has had more than it's share of crime. If I was a student there, I would without a doubt carry. I might devise a carved out book or something to keep it better concealed - but at least I would have some chance of fighting back if the need arose. Campus crime in general is under reported or mis reported. That is the first thing prospective parents will look at. I found that UGA's report varied from the Athen's PD reports. All in the symantecs of it.

    Several shining lights however:

Cincinnati and South Western OH tend to have the greatest number of citizens with concealed carry licenses. We have a fairly pro-carry legislature, governor and attorney general. The house does have pending legislation that would expand carry rights, HB 225. It's been brought up here before. It would allow campus carry. My guess is that you will see a lot of activity on this coming in the spring.

I know. The chances of it happening are decent though. It's going to take a while to get through everything. I know Buckeye Firearms has a rep on here. I'm tempted to say those of us here in OH take a page from past legislative action and do an initiative for next year's general election that is word for word HB 225, Alaska Carry, College Carry...add something on restaurant carry and use it as a bully pulpit like they did with the strip club bill. One of the reasons that went through was the citizen intitative that prompted the Ohio General Assembly to do their own legislation. They ,quite simply, did not want the people to do it. Considering how sweeping the bill is, they might get pretty interested in looking at it.

Campus administrators try to hide crime on campus in order to keep new students coming in. If they were honest a lot of folks would end up going to a trade school!!
