An off-duty police officer shot himself in the foot at a Westside auto parts store Wednesday.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Thomas D Weida, 40, suffered a bullet wound to his right foot when his .45-caliber handgun accidentally discharged at the W I Motor Supply store, 4250 W. Morris St., at 3:15 p.m., according to a police report.
The gun was Weida's personal firearm and not department issue, police said. He was carrying it in his front pocket when it fired.
"When he reached in to his pocket to pull out his key ring it became entangled in the trigger of the pistol and it discharged," Sgt. Paul Thompson said in a written statement.
Weida was taken to Methodist Hospital in good condition, Thompson said.
No one else was injured.
Weida, a nine-year veteran, is assigned to the department's traffic section.

Hmmm .. pocket carry IMO predicates an otherwise empty pocket - like, nothing there that might hinder either the draw or - interfere with trigger!

Doubly so if you are carrying without a pocket holster to protect the trigger!
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

Sounds like it was not holstered in the pocket - bad idea.

I don't like pocket carry but will concede there are times when it's the thing to do. I would not have a gun and something else in my pocket at the same time.

The only thing in my pocket is a 442, a Kramer holster and somtimes my hand. That's it. Even when I don't pocket carry I don't put anything in it.

What .45 could fit in your pocket anyways? I have a warthog which is pretty small and that won't fit into my pockets.

Now see...this is exactly why I don't pocket carry...Can you imagine if it wasn't just his "foot" he hit!
Seriously though, what the heck was he doing pocket carrying without a holster and with lots of other objects floating around in there? Real rocket-scientist there.

Even with my snubbie (in a pocket holster) inmy pocket, I can't fit anything else in my pocket even if I wanted too.

Sounds like he had a Kahr PM45 or something similar - DAO, and foolishly without a pocket holster. Hope he winds up okay, but dollars to donuts getting a proper holster or changing his habits won't even cross his mind.
