Well the doctor finally asked the question today...

I took my son in for the 4 month appointment.

Our family doctor had moved to a new office, and as part of that move her office now has electronic medical record keeping which can be linked into a central database for our local area. Its kind of a nice thing in that if we have to go to the hospital for anything, the personel their can pull up any pertinet information to the problem they are treating.

Apparently, as part of this new electronic program, this question has been put into the software: "Do you have any firearms in the house?"

We have had this doctor for 3 years now and intend to keep her forever. We are her first family patients, and have established a great rapore with her. Never has the topic of firearms ever come up in a profesional meeting.

    The conversation went like this:

Doc: "Do you have any firearms in the house?"

Me: smiling "None of your concern."

Doc: Looks at me and smiles "Are they secured or locked up?"

    Me: "None of your concern."

That was the end of it. She knows that we own firearms. I have never disclosed that I carry, which I happened to be at that very moment. I don't believe that it is a big deal to her. However, as I think I very well pointed out, I believe the fact that I do own firearms has absolutely no bearing on my or my family's medical records.

Everything else went fine, and she reminded me of my upcoming physical. I think she just enjoys those so she can have the opertunity to harp on me about my bad habits.
I will support gun control when you can guarantee all guns are removed from this planet. That includes military and law enforcement. When you can accomplish that, then I will be the last person to lay down my gun. Then I will carry the weapon that replaces the gun.

You could have edged in a bit, look side to side and whispered "You need me to hook you up with a little something, eh?"

    Excellent response.

This type of invasion of privacy really concerns me. Once something like that gets in a database, there's no way to limit where it might go..........

The sharing that occurs between medical providers, insurance companies, TPA's, and potentially the government is like the Ebola Virus, except Ebola burns out too fast, but it sure is deadly in the meantime.

Great way to answer. Our pediatrician asks all kinds of inane questions to our kids. Does mom or dad smoke? Do they drink? etc etc. Have not had the gun question as of yet. I have often wondered who they share that information with!

I'm getting my annual physical tomorrow. I know my doctor is not fond of firearms. He has 7 children and screens the parents of the kids before he lets them spend the night. I'm going to start educating him a little more about how to protect his kids from firearms by getting them involved in shooting.

I probably would have just answered no. She probably put yes for those questions since your answer was obviously yes.

I used to be a chiropractor. I can tell you, they have heard/seen it all. When you answer like that, they know the answer is yes and that is how they record it.

You can sort of deflect the answer without really lying by saying something like:

"Do WE have a gun in the house?? Doctor, do you know how many people die from gun shot wounds each year?"

Well, you really didn't answer the question, but you implied that you do not own firearms. The doctor would probably report a no response.

(If they doctor is any good, he will ask you to directly answer the question, but sometimes you can bamboozle them.)

I am appalled by the question and never been asked here in MN. I'm there for a medical exam and not a home exam.
