    Why One-Way Reciprocity?

OK, I am primarily interested in Texas but would love to hear about other states similar situations...

I was looking at Texas' Reciprocity Agreements and notice we honor permits from a lot of states that don't honor ours. My question is, why bother? Why allow people from other states to carry here if we can't carry there?

The definition of reciprocity was "the relation or policy in commercial dealings between countries by which corresponding advantages or privileges are granted by each country to the citizens of the other." Or in other words, a mutually beneficial agreement. Honoring another state's permits without ours being honored is not reciprocity in my book, but pure stupidity.

    What are your thoughts?

    Cheers! M2

Because one states standards for obtaining a permit might be higher than the others.

Exactly... Texas is O-K with their permit holders carrying in Texas since they had to meet a higher standard of training. Their state is in the opposite position, where they are not going to accept the lower standard of training that Texas requires.

Tennessee is one of several states that honors ALL valid permits issued by other states. I believe the notion follows "full faith and credit"--Tennessee chooses to do so because the state legislature thinks it is the right thing to do. Unfortunately, this does not cover folks from Vermont. Alaska (similar to Vermont since it does not require a permit to carry concealed) issues a permit so their citizens have a permit to allow carrying in states like Tennessee. OMO, YMMV.

Reciprocity is two way - what your seeing is called "Recognition". Some state laws state that other states permits will be honored if certain conditions (training, etc) are met. However the issuing state may not recognize anybody's at all.

Reciprocity - both states agree that the other states are permit are valid in their home state. (i.e. I will honor yours, if you honor hours).

Arkansas amended their law to basically say that anyone that recognizes us will be recognized by us.
That make our permit good in 30 states.

Wouldn't it be great if ALL of the states would do this?

I live in CT, they don't honor anybodys. CT is honored in about 13 other states.

Yes, that is the way I think it should be. Much like drivers licenses, if you are issued one by a particular state it should be valid in every state. Otherwise, if a state doesn't recognize your concealed permits, you shouldn't recognize theirs. Just because some state makes it harder or damn near impossible to get a permit doesn't mean the great state of Texas has to recognize it. Just the opposite, if they are that tough about carrying then they shouldn't expect to be able to carry in other states. What makes them so superior? I think these "recognitions" by which a state honors another's permits but the opposite doesn't apply just adds fuel to that belief. Stop allowing them to carry in other states and maybe they will become a little more welcoming to those from other states to carry in theirs.

    Cheers! M2

I respect a State that honors others permit, even when that other state doesn't honor theirs

The state that honors shows "class"
Shows it respects the people that went thru the hoops to obtain a permit ,
It says "welcome to our state, we respect your right to carry "

All it would take is a national standard be set for CCW licensing. Then the individual states would be forced to accept any other licensed individual. NOT that I want a national carry permit, just a set of standards for each state to meet. I got an out-of-state carry permit (accepted widely) that didn't even require me to prove competence!

Not really. We don't have a national standard for drivers licenses but they are recognized everywhere. All it would take is for some of those liberal politicians to "man up" and grow a set of balls bigger than that of an ant.
