I am wondering if the AWB (Assault Whistle Ban) will allow more than ten blasts from the whistle when attacked. After all, whistles are noisy and can damage ones hearing and disturb the peace while a murder is being committed!

I have a female friend that used to carry a can of raid and a lighter as her self-defense tool because she is from NYC and grew up with the "guns are bad" brainwashing. Nothing against the law or the rules about being prepared to kill some roaches and have a smoke! I'll bet singing the eyebrows off a would-be rapist might be a bit of a deterrent!

Nope. Those were reclassified as NFA whistles some time last year, including the pre '86 whistles with a registered pea....

This happened a few weeks ago - I guess the whistle thing is catching on.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Park district police in the state capital plan to start handing out free emergency whistles people can use to call for help if they're attacked.

The move comes after a 48-year-old woman was attacked while jogging in Springfield's Washington Park. She fought off her attacker. No one has been arrested.

The plastic whistles come in bright yellow, red, blue or green. Park District Police Chief George Judd says he hopes potential attackers see the whistles and are scared off.

You know, I've been joking with friends that if I have to fly on a plane or otherwise spend time in a gun-free zone again, I'll carry a pool ball (like a cueball) in a long sock. Nothing illegal about that, and oh man would that hurt.

    Peace,
    Pete Zaria.

    There's an idea.

You know what would be even better (at least as far as not raising eyebrows with the TSA)? Some of those meditation jingly balls. YOu know, you get the pair, and spin them around in your hand? Get a set of really big ones - they're metal, and would work almost as well as a cue ball. Granted, they won't be as heavy, but they won't raise nearly as many eyebrows as a cueball would, either. Put both of them in a sock...if anyone asks, tell them it's just to keep them muffled.

That should read: Wish safe, Hope safe, or Pray safe. Not, "stay" safe. Not "be" safe.

Requesting an escort is fine. But 24x7 escorting simply isn't possible on a campus of 17,000 students across ~300 acres that has unlimited points of entry/egress.

As for the idea of a whistle, it's a good one. For hiking, swimming, kayaking or other activities where notifying others is important. It can't be relied upon, though (obviously), for self-defense. As indicated, if defense is required, folks aren't going to hear the whistle if they don't hear the gunshot ... and, in the end, all you've done is wasted time futzing with the whistle.

The more of this crap I read the more I just shake my head in disbelief. This Police Chief should be tarred and feathered for even suggesting such a thing as a means of protecting people. If this is the best advise he can come up with he should loose his job on the spot.

remember if you get more than one beep with a single blow its a machine whistle and must be registered.

So... if you believe that there is a rapist about, you should carry a whistle? For what? If you see the rapist, you blow the whistle so other people know he's in the area? What do they do? Blow their whistles?

These libs can't seem to make the connection that eventually, someone has to act, instead of just calling for someone else to act.

as long as Bernie Anderson (Chair of Assembly Judiciary Committee) looses his re-election bid this year we'll have clear sailing in the NV legislature to remove almost all gun-free zones from our laws. as well as elminate the qualification requirement for getting our permits. Bernie has been a big hurdle to pro-gun laws in NV for many years, and it's time to make him pay for it. if you happen to live in his district, do not vote for his re-election!!

I think the whistles are a great idea for people who don't like guns, as long as there are CCWs in the area. Of course the whistleblowers would greatly increase their chances of survival if they get the proper training and a CCW.
Then they can use the whistle to direct medical personnel to the bad guy.
