Stay safe, get a whistle.
The Reno college campuses have experienced a tragic string of Abductions/Rapes over the las several months. In an effort to curb this and keep students safe, the sent out an email with the following helpful advice:
"Stay Safe: Get a Whistle, Request an Escort
The UNR community has experienced several public safety issues recently that have led to some fear and concern. UNR and the Reno Police Department are working diligently to solve these crimes. TMCC and its police department are sensitive to these concerns. The TMCC Police Department has a limited number of safety whistles available at its reception desk in RDMT 241; the whistles are available at no charge. The department ordered more whistles and will make them available to students, faculty and staff as soon as the whistles arrive."
My wife is a UNR student who takes night classes, and also has her CCW. We're both extremely upset about this lack of protection being offered and solutions provided. In her first class yesterday, one of the professors actually suggested students carry a ski pole.

"Stop! Or I'll blow my whistle!!"
Janq's suggestion of carrying around a gun-lock and using it as a club is one of the best ideas I've ever heard for personal safety on a campus - short of a knife or firearm of course. A ski pole? Right. So you can try and hit them with it? Chances are good they'll get inside an attack evelope of the pointy end REAL fast.

Not those deadly high capacity 'black' whistles, I hope.

Bad part about it is that if people heard a whistle blowing would they even do anything about it? Guess I just don't have a whole lot of faith in people these days. No one seems to want to get involved. When I was in college there sure weren't many officers around on campus either.

If the gunshots didn't attract any attention, what hope does the whistle have?
Battle Plan (n) - a list of things that aren't going to happen if you are attacked.
Blame it on Sixto - now that is a viable plan.

get her a good knife. i live in reno and worked security there for 2 years. you are allowed a blade as long as its under 4 inches.
security was a lame job but it keeps you in the know with unr rules.

Aye, great advice, and she carries a nice folder almost everywhere. Unfortunately, getting into a knife fight with a 200lb guy doesn't exactly leave her on equal footing.
I mean, goon comes up, pulls a skinning knife and tells her to get in the van. Is pulling out a pocket knife and going 1 on 1 really a believable scenario? Better than no option at all, but not by much.

They might as well say.

That's the ticket. Get a whistle and wait for Reno 911 to respond.

Did they also provide proper retention training for that thing? We cannot have those things getting into the wrong hands can we. That would just blow the whole thing!
