One of my (many) most loathed statements

This is a real old cherry -

''Taking the law, into your own hands''! Sheesh. The ''Law'' pretty much states that homicide is illegal - but try telling that to BG's !!

I had this quoted to me again by an old buddy in UK (chatted with him again this evening) - who seemingly has become more anti gun over time, despite the fact that way back he made me some nice traditional holsters.

Do folks really just not get it? I think not. Ask anyone to actually come up with a realistic appraisal of response time for cops to arrive and they will (often grudgingly) admit - ''oh well, I guess, a few minutes''.

Folks, this is exactly the time frame within which we as individuals, have to have our own means of protection - simply to survive. Cops (bless 'em) cannot protect - they can of course draw chalk lines round corpses, and hopefully eventually find out who a killer is - but as for instant protection - forget it - and most I know if honest admit, just that.

Despite all this totally transparent logic - this buddy still says stuff like - ''oh well - that's as maybe - but you shouldn't need a gun''. Oh right - so I raise my personal force-field when confronted by a BG with a gun. Hah!

He even still says (brace yerself) - '' If you carry a gun - you are asking for trouble'' Oh my - that one knocks me out!

Oh well - I still expect and hope to meet my maker never having fired in anger - and hope he too dies a natural and non traumatic death - but bottom line is - if I should come under threat - lethal threat - then sure as heck I WANT a means to respond. It is my responsibility and mine alone.

Sorry - rant mode I guess - I tried to stay polite with him but I think he has been speaking with the Brady Bunch :biggrin:

Typical tripe. They are of the "it can never happen here" or the "it will never happen to me" mindset.

Sure, you have a slim chance that you will ever be a victim. But, there still is a chance.

Case in point: I was bit in 2001 by a stray cat that had been hit by a car (van actually). I got the Rabie shots (and those that are able to post/search on FFF, do a search, it's all there) because I had a chance, even if it was 1%, it was still a chance.

Criminals kill, Rabies kill. I don't take the chance on either. I carry my gun because there is a chance. I paid $2,500 for the rabies shots because there was a chance. Unless the odds are 100/0 then I don't take chances on life and death situations.

One of the latest Supreme Court decisions (Castle Rock v. Gonzales) dealt with the issue of whether the police have a duty to provide you with protection from crime....and as with several decisions before this one, the answer is no.

If the police are not responsible for your protection, then who is? :rolleyes:

I wouldn't mind this attitude as much if they'd just keep it to themselves and not try to shove it down my throat.

P95, I have been hit with that stupid statement before. I usually ask them to answer the following question: If you and me are walking along the street and some guy jumps at you and tries to kill you for whatever reason, do you want me to step aside, call 911 and wait for the cops to show up or save your life?

Usually shuts them up in a hurry.

Criminals and Bad Guys "take the law into their hands" & that it why we take firearms into our hands. To take the law back.

Some people do not have personal control over themselves & they are incapable of understanding how another person really CAN control themselves.

Some people are not able or willing to deal with whatever "life" might toss their way & they will never understand preparedness.

We all tend to assume that most people basically think, rationalize, and process information like we do...and they don't.

Some people that think they (or you) will only get into trouble if they (or you) carry a firearm ~ probably will get into trouble if they carry a firearm & they should probably never carry one.

Some people will always live their lives on "permanent potential victim status" and the Law Of Averages is the only real defensive shield that will ever carry with them.

Here's the one that flames my rear. "You must be afraid". I usally say, "nope, I'm all set, you're the one that should be afraid".

Usually when I hear that statement I reply that I am in fact NOT taking the law into my own hands. I have no intention of arresting or going to trial with ANYBODY. Regardless of how good the cops are, they do not prevent crimes from happening. When all is said and done and you have called the cops, even if the offender is caught, you have still been a victim!

I usually tell them that I am on a victimization reduction program.

If you have a fire extinguisher, spare tire, cell phone, and medical insurance, does that mean you are afraid? Or does it mean you are prepared for emergencies? Doesn't it follow that a firearm is simply one more emergency preparedness tool?

I've been asked; "What are you afraid of?" I reply that I am not afraid of anything or anyone I just prefer to operate from the Boy Scout point of view. "Always be prepared."

It has been said that an armed society is a polite society. I can relate to that and my first reaction to any confrontational situation is to de-escalate, then disengage. These two rules should be the mindset of anyone who carries. Also to be aware of those places/situations which could lead to confrontation and avoid them. Hence, the "polite society".

We should definitely try to convert the anti-gun, anti-2nd Amendment crowd, but it's not easy to convert people who are truly afraid of guns. They have difficulty viewing them as inanimate objects.

When people make comments about me carrying, I say "I lock my doors at night, wear my seatbelt in a car, and I carry a gun everywhere. It's the same thing." When you simplify it for people they begin to understand. Some people are deathly afraid of guns but don't hesitate to ride in or drive a car everyday. It makes no sense.

way too many of the "oh, someone will protect me" types. Forget that, protecting myself is MY job. Way too little personal responsibility and way too much of the "oh so you are one of those gun people..."

that has to be my favorite. i'm i the only one that gets the concept of CONCEALED carry?!!! if they don't know i have it how can i be asking for trouble.

"the minute you pull that gun you'ur dead" don't draw on a drawn gun its that simple. distract him, step off his line of sight, somthing to get that crucial second to draw and fire. but it rasies the question "how did a gun get drawn on me in the first place without me knowing?" i should be in condition yellow and see these things comeing. and if i don't fight i'm probably dead anyways. i don't get how people can just lay down and take it.

And if you're wearing a seatbelt, you're just asking to mow down some innocent motorist. Home insurance? You must be planning arson. Life insurance? Your'e planning on killing your spouse!
