    Hammerfall

Was just recently reading this mid-1970's novel about a comet striking Earth.

Some very interesting correlations, both in people's behaviour and in the environmental issues like flooding... except in Hammerfall the most governments were destroyed at the national level, resulting in an eventual return to feudalism as people allied with those in a better position than themselves.

However, at the local level (including cops ignoring most crime because there's nowhere to put the bg, and they're more worried about protecting their own) the book is almost prophetic.

Evers since Red Dawn I've been fascinated by survival scenarios. My parents were briefly associated wih the LDS, so having supplies stored up is something I'm used to as well. I think after all this I'm going to have to dredge up old habits.

Hmmm... now where can I install an underground Diesel tank here??

There have been some very detailed and almost sooth-saying novels written - and the common theme is usually and predictably the breakdown of society etc.

Society however large or small depends for at least adequate stability on rules - both social and the law - which then predicates a supervisory force, per LE etc. This with some luck - keeps the lid on most of the time tho even then ''leaks'' occur but they get dealt with. Not forgetting too the other stuff we take so much for granted like power, water, communications and transportation.

Remove all usual and expected services, to the degree we see in NO and very rapidly things become nasty - in part because of starvation, dehydration and disease. There is no longer a true social structure - giving then easy reign to mob rule and survival of the fittest - the latter unfortunately being often survival by rule of force, until that is a superior force like NG troops arrive and get the heavy hammer out to re-establish some structure.

I'll wager, now the military are getting there, it will not be long (if reported) that there are necessary shootings of the fringe and dangerous element.

From what I've read many of the Guard troops being sent in are literally just off the plane from Iraq. While I sympathize with them jumping from one crisis into another, if these troops were conditioned by their time in Iraq the way I was regarding the use of force and threat identification, the BGs in NO are in for a rude awakening.

    Feudalism

The return to feudalism is an interesting observation. Scary as it might seem, the people best situated to assume this type of feudal power are the gangs. They have numbers, organization, identification, and the ruthless predisposition to impose their will on the weak and disorganized. They specialise in using numbers to overpower individuals or smaller groups. Isn't that a nice thought to take to bed with you.

    Question

Meanwhile if Earth ever does get hit by a Comet ~ New Orleans is going to seem like a Stroll Through The Park.

I wonder how modern Humans would make it through a new Ice Age!?!

OG - I fear you are frighteningly correct - just like the ''Mob'' exerted so much influence back in prohibition days - they were organized and had structure, as well as being well armed.

Now we have MS-13 - a scary buch of hoodlums and certainly I could see them wielding a lot of influence in a crisis situation. Glad I have just had my sleep!

    P95,

I see you have an incursion of MS13 in your area as well. There have been several articles in our local paper that MS-13 is gaining ground on the Hampton Roads, VA.

Actually cjm - no obvious evidence of them round this part of SW PA tho I'd not be surprised if they ain't somewhere in Pittsburgh by now. They do seem to be spreading and IMO need dealt with in the harshest way possible.

Gulp! maybe it is time to unseal my grandpaw's old bomb shelter...

Actually it isn't much and he called it a tornado shelter but it is an old rusty 50X12 1/2" thick steel tube (outside shell of a really big boiler?) that he burried in the side of a hill a long time ago. In the early 90's the hill slumped down and covered the entrance. Since it was kinda nasty in there anyway (water leaks around the riveted seams) and all he had in it was some old furniture that a former tennant moved off and left, he never bothered to dig it back out. It would make a heck of a bunker if there was a way to seal it up.

Kinda makes me want to go check it out.
