Need sources for a college paper

Hey yall, I'm writing a paper for a college writing class. It is supposed to be an argument piece, so of coarse I'm writing against gun control. I need help finding reliable sources for hard statistics, violent crime rates for illinois and other parts of the country for the last few years would be a huge help. Anything else you all can think of would be awesome. Also any thoughts or viewpoints would be helpful (yeah I know most of them but a compilation would rock) This needs to be a pretty long paper. Thanks for the help!

I can't offer any Illinois info however, here's a link to a story and thread about Georgia gun laws that serves as an example of government's malicious denial of personal defense rights. The racial twist here should tie your (likely) liberal, gun-hating, PC professors into knots.

Thank you thank you thank you. I will be using that, and it will get my gun-hating liberal professor into a knot.

Don't forget to address counter points, that is, assuming you'd like a good grade.

One of my A papers used:

Lott, John R. Jr. - More Guns Less Crime (be careful, his "study" on the number of defensive gun uses is highly questionable).

Jacobs, James B. - Can Gun Control Work?

Blumstein, Alfred and Joel Wallman - The Crime Drop in America

Poe, Richard - The Seven Myths of Gun Control

Stevens, Richard W. - Dial 911 and Die

De Tocqueville, Alexis D. - Democracy In America (Read about the Tyranny of Majority - useful if you are going to have any emotional elements to your argument).

Malcolm, Joyce L. - Gun Control: The English Experience (Perfect for use against emotional arguments for gun control).

Kleck, Gary - Targeting Guns: Firearms and their Control ( Everyone should own this book )

I believe history books and articles would make great sources for your paper, as well as crime stats in countries where private ownership of firearms is strictly forbidden.

Search for the Center for Disease Control (CDC). They did a report which concluded that gun laws have no effect on reducing violent crime. It is a source that the anti's can't much argue with. If I can find the link, I'll post it or PM you.

Also, check out the briefs filed for the Heller case in SCOTUS -- interesting reading, and they give great sources. I thought the brief filed by the Attorneys General from many states was exceptional.

PM me your email address and I'll send you a little something I wrote for my college writing class last year.
Also, a British journal on crime (I wish I remembered the name) wrote a GREAT paper on the failure of the Australian gun buy-back and ban. I'll see if I can find it.
Bleeding-heart reporter: “Do you feel that violence begets violence?”
Jeff Cooper: “It is my earnest endeavor to see that it does. I would like very much to ensure - and in some cases I have - that any man who offers violence to his fellow citizen begets a whole lot more than he can enjoy."

Here is the info on that journal paper:
Baker, J., & McPhedran, S. (2006) Gun Laws and Sudden Death: Did the Australian Firearms Legislation of 1996 Make a Difference?. British Journal of Criminology

I had to do a similar paper but only for a summer class (very brief). Got a lot of great links but didn't get to use most of them.

This works well for hard data on firearms and crime stats:
Bureau of Justice Statistics Key Crime and Justice Facts at a Glance

    ...and for Great Britain:
Crime Statistics for England and Wales - British Crime Survey: Violent crime

This is one of my favorites. I think this link is an excerpt with potential to purchase but I remember finding a free version somewhere. Good data on why gun control does not work by showing it in action in the socialist states of Great Britain, Canada, etc.
The Fraser Institute - Publication Details -- The Failed Experiment: Gun Control and Public Safety in Canada, Australia, England and Wales

National Center for Policy Analysis has a great article on myths about gun control especially on why criminals carry:
NCPA - Policy Report 176 - Myths About Gun Control

A fascinating piece from th 97th Congress back in 1982 (check out some of the names from both sides of the isle!):
The Right to Keep and Bear Arms

    Hope these help.

Good luck on your paper and please share the results. Maybe have a camera ready to capture that special moment when your prof sees the title.
The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. 'Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?' 'No Ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my rifle.'
