    Washington State Residents

We had the hearings for the ammunition encoding bill here in MD yesterday.

As you may know, the impetus for these bills has come from a Tacoma based company.

The owner of the company testified yesterday that he is an avid gun owner and Washington CCW holder.

Is there anyway to confirm that he has a CCW in Washington?

I am not aware of any. But WA has not requirements other than the usual (21yrs, clean history and a 30 day wait).

Can you PLEASE do that. This really has national implications because we can show this guy to be a bigger fraud than we already have.

    Anyone catch his name?

They're also trying to push a bill through our legislation (WA).

Russ works for Ammunition Coding Systems
Briahna works for Gordon Thomas Honeywell Government Affairs

I'll see what I'm able to find out through legal channels.

    Edit:

Maybe go up and ask to see his permit, and ask what gun he carries. Seems like the easiest way. Did you all happen to notice how Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell voted on the 2nd Amendment bill before Congress by the way?

Sounds like a strong argument for rolling your own. What do they "encode?" Is it a number on the brass or something?

They laser inscribe a serial number on both the back of the bullet and the case (although I haven't been able to confirm where on the case, I suspect it'll be inside so it can't just be sanded off).

Under the proposed legislation (developed by his company, BTW) you would no be able to load your own because ALL ammunition without the encoding would be required to be destroyed by a certain date say, 1 Jan 09, 1 Jan 11, etc).

Additionally, Cam Edwards from NRA News interviewed this guy for about 40 minutes and this guy is clueless. He's never tested this - never produced ammunition of any amount with this process!! He can't tell you how to produce it on a mass scale, can't tell how to ensure the bullet and casing with the same encoded information get together, much less how to verify that the two components match. Or if the encoding would survive impacting a target (afterall, each of over 8 BILLION rounds would need a distinct code, year after year). How large can it be on the back of a .22 or .38 bullet? One of his biggest complaints was the ammunition manufacturers wouldn't help him determine how it could work. DUH!! He kept trying to compare this process with putting codes on mail and soda cans and how optical readers work so well in those applications and it would work just as well with ammunition... other than he'd never done it before.

This guy needs to be stopped. So far, it seems legislators are smart enough to see this is unworkable (except California, of course - 'nuf said.)

Funny thing about the hearings yesterday. They heard his testimony and then moved on to other bills. They made the opposing testimony (that would be us) wait another 5 hours!

He scooted on out as soon as he was done.

    That's the bung hole.

You may have already seen this thread at arfcom. This is the guy that broke out most of the information.

Also, if you start at post 104 of this thread there's some more good information.

There, corrected it for you. The above timeframe is what I had to deal with when I received mine locally.
