    Weapons and Trains

    Hey All -

I'm going to FLA with the family from VA in March and we're taking the Autotrain. The last time I took a train, there was no metal detector, no security to speak of whatsoever. We carried our own bags onto the train!

That said, can someone point me to information about carrying whilst traveling by train.

Normally, I'd leave it locked in the luggage compartment of the car we'll be driving once we get OFF the train, but if there's no metal detectors, I don't want to be the only one not carrying - especially since it's an overnight ride. Isn't it something about on a train, the rules apply based on whatever state the train is in right now? If so, I think I'm good, because all the states south of me (I believe) are gun friendly

    Thanks,
    Andy

Also, you might want to check the reciprocity agreements. The last time I took a trip to FL from VA was a few months ago and SC and GA were still not reciprocating or honoring VA permits. You can searh each state's concealed weapons policy online.

A good resource for a reciprocity map is Handgunlaw.us. It also allows you to create combined maps if you happen to have a non-resident permit as well.

I'm just one root in a grassroots organization. No one should assume that I speak for the VCDL.

I am neither an attorney-at-law nor I do play one on television or on the internet. No one should assumes my opinion is legal advice.

AutoTrain is run by Amtrak. You legally can't even have it secured in your car while it is on the train.

That's why I drove. At least you can check it on the plane, it's over in 2 hours instead of 17 (Lorton to Sanford, I take it), and it costs less. Take the plane and rent a car.

Also they now have roving security teams that can show up and search you and your luggage. If you refuse you don't ride. They are not at every station, they travel from one to another.

I suppose if you feel you need to carry on a train you could hop a freight like a Hobo.
