Going to travel through IL and OK

In a few weeks, I am going to be making a trip to Oklahoma and Chicago. I will be spending about a week in each local. I do not think that OK will be an issue, but Chicago is somewhat problematic. I can structure the trip any which way I want.

I do not see any way to get my CCW to/from Chicago. Am I just out of luck?

(And no, I will not fly to OK, spend my week, fly back to Portland, drop off my CCW and head on out to Chicago, although I did consider it.)

Oklahoma will not be a problem. I have been told that you can ship a firearm to yourself through the post office without a ffl. This came up with some guys wanting to send their guns to themselves in Alaska for a hunting trip. This might be your only option before you leave for IL. I am interested in what you are able to come up with.
    Good Luck.

You might be able to travel to IL with the firearm and when you get to your hotel have them put it in the hotels safe.
Then again, as unfriendly as IL is towards gun owners, maybe not.

The Chicago airport is not near as idiotic as the NY airport.

I think you will be fine and agree with putting the gun in the hotel safe. Although you might consider keeping it in your room overnight and only putting it in the safe when out in public. Which really defeats the purpose.

My $.02 worth, stay out of Chicago, any part of it including a hotel or airport with a gun. It is not worth the risk. Choose another less lethal form of protection.

I spent most of my life in Indiana within a rocks throw of Illinois. Transporting a firearm in Illinois is definitely a pain in the lower back side. This website sould be able to answer your questions for you though. Carry Legal in Illinois

Oklahoma on the other hand, you'll be fine.

    Hope this helps

A word of caution on the "6 Seconds to Safety" with the fanny pack carry. You may or may not be OK depending on the particular county.

This came to the forefront in about 2001. At the time my dept was getting calls on a daily basis from the public and other LEA wanting guidance on the fanny pack carry.

We contacted the IL Attorney General for an opinion that could be put out statewide so everyone would be operating on the same page. The AG at the time was running for governor and refused to give an opinion. Instead his office deferred the interpretation to the individual state's attorneys of which there are 102 in IL. So we contacted every one of the SAs for their opinions. Their opinions varied from 1) fanny pack carry is illegal and they'll prosecute to 2) fanny pack carry is legal and nothing to prosecute to 3) they'll decide on each individual case brought before them at the time. # 3 was the most prevelant response. So what we got was 1 county where an SA interpreted fanny pack carry as illegal, the adjoining county where the SA interpreted fanny pack carry as legal, and another adjoining county where the SA wanted the specific incident brought before him before he decided whether to prosecute. Just crossing the road could change a person from being OK to being arrested. So in the end neither the public nor LE got a firm answer on the question.

Since my dept did this survey the IL AG has changed and quite a few of the SAs have changed. As of 2 yrs ago we had not conducted the survey again. However, I believe that if the survey was conducted today that the responses would be the same. Some individual counties might change but overall the responses would probably closely mirror what we got in 2001.

So the word of caution is before anyone in IL decides to fanny pack carry that they contact the SA in which ever county they intend to carry and get the opinion from the specific SA. Just remember that the opinion of one SA has absolutely no bearing on any other SA's opinion. Each SA is an independant prosecutor and elected official of the county answering to no other governmental agency.

You also need to check this link for ordinances passed by the various municipalities:

Some cities in IL outlaw handguns; Chicago is one of them.

OK will be fine. Just no open carry(dangit!) The normal laws here. No casinos, bars, city or state buildings. Matter fact, Oklahoma is pretty pro gun....unless you happen to be in Tulsa and oh geez, I can't help ya there.

Actually, I am going to be in Bartlesville of all places. Maybe we can go out shooting.
