    Took my CCW class today

    Hey everybody,

I just got back from a 12 hour CCW class at the range. Now all I have to do is turn in my paperwork, fingerprints and pics to the Alaska State Troopers to get my permit.

The truly beautiful thing about living in Alaska is that I don't have to wait for my permit to carry concealed. Anyone in the state who can legally own a firearm can legally carry open or concealed. I took the class for 4 reasons:

    1. to get proper concealment training
    2. to get proper training regarding use of force in the state of Alaska
    3. to get reciprocity with other states
    4. to add some level of rapport and credibility with any LEO encounters I may have.

All in all it was a fabulous class, taught by an ex FBI agent, Alaska State Trooper and a criminal prosecuting attorney.

The 4 hours with the attorney was worth the money if nothing else was.

So, I'm going to be glad to enter the ranks of the CCW permit holders nation wide.

Thank God for the Second Amendment!!!

I live in Palmer and took my class at the Mat Valley Sportsman's Range.

It is funny, the only city in the state that prohibits open carry is the city of Palmer. Thankfully, they cannot infringe on my right to carry concealed...

Way to go! Those are the best reasons right there; especially getting it on the record that you were formally trained.

    Sounds like a great class.

And with a lawyer no less. Four hours w/any attorney would normally cost you a grand!

Congratulations! My girlfriend just took her class today. I don't know how many bad guys she dry fired at on the TV working up for it. She and her friend, the only two females in the class, ended up first and second on the qualification.

Congrats.....4 hours with a lawyer.....just think that would probably cost you $600-800 if it wasn't in the class!!

Welcome to the ranks of chl holders. My opinion is that it makes the licensee safer and also the population safer. I hope you never need to exercise your right to defend yourself.

Congrats on your first step to responsible CCW.
Not to burst your bubble, but #1 isn't going to happen in a 12 hour class. Just keep that in mind as you decide your next step.

This attorney is an assistant to the state Attorney General, a prosecutor by trade, who developed a 20 page guide written to delineate every applicable law for CCW, including the use of non-deadly force, deadly force and how those are defined.

This is the guy who trains other prosecutors on the law and we got to train with him. Plus, there were only 6 guys there, so it was pretty much a 4 hour Q and A session with a guy who charges about $400 per hour.
