SInce you are in VA, play it safe....... Go around, that's what the beltway is for! (And be careful on the GW and BW parkways, they are NPS property.)

My wife is British and we need to go to the American Consulate. I just hate to be in DC unarmed.

If you're going to the consulate, then you're not going "through" D.C., but "to" D.C.

I'd leave the car (and locked-up gun) across the river in VA and take the Metro in.

I have no idea, but it seems too easy to go around, if it's possible for your circumstances.

leave guns at home or secured in a vehicle safe....metro in to DC...DO NOT carry a gun.

I work 3 miles from DC (in VA) and feel sorry for all who live there...although they choose to live in a cesspool...

Simple answer is no. Not lawfully and there are signs indicating just this.
DC is well known to be a gun free zone.

Could you possibly get away with it?
Yes. Thousands do per year. Ask anyone who is actually living in or from DC.

Are you going to be able to get on to US govt. property and past their security inspection of your vehicle and person with a firearm?
    Not very likely.

One last item of note, a gun is _not_ the only means by which one can be armed. This and how has been covered in multiple threads of the not so distant past.
