In NY you are not allowed to own a pistol until you acquire your permit.

Oh, I see. I've never understood the WalMart thing either... until now. I wonder if it's a generational thing?

I am in Upstate NY also (Saugerties, Exit 20 on the Thruway). I carry in Wal-Mart, Gander, Dick's Sporting, etc. to buy ammo all the time. It just becomes second nature. Of course, you must have an unrestricted permit to do this. If there are restrictions, and you get caught, it's deep doo-doo.

You may want to leapfrog Illinois, too. South is just as good as west, but you've got a couple of silly states in the way there, as well.

But I think they're smaller to hop over

I feel sorry for all of you from NY. I haven't looked at numbers lately, What's crime like these day's? Are the BG's obeying the gun laws?
So if someone moved to New York with handguns and didn't have a NY permit, then what you have to sell them before you move there. Is it the City or is the whole state in the dark?

Since when do the BG's obey ANY laws?

Although NY is not as liberal as other states, (and NY City is out of the question), it's really not bad once you get your permit. That takes a little while (mine took 4 months), but then it's easy going, except for those 5 little boroughs that comprise NYC!

I am from upstate also (Rochester) and it took me about 4 months to get my CCW. Like some one posted earlier, the Walmart voyage is just to get over the initial carrying paranoia and of course to pick up some cheap ammo. I have been carrying concealed here for about a year this july and have taken an NRA course and Basic Pistol course with Dave Jenkins at Rochester personal defense (highly recommend). BUT the GOOD NEWS is I am escaping NY May 30 and moving to Florida. Waiting on my ccw there as we speak. Its been 3 weeks

I've been watching the discussion about getting your permit, secreting your weapon on your person and going to Wal-Mart to buy nachos and ammo.
Now to me the phrase "getting your permit, secreting your weapon on your person " raises some real concerns when taken with the tone of the post ( " So the idea of someone buying a pistol for the first time, walking around Wal-Mart with it, without ever having fired it (buying ammo) seems to me a little dangerous." ).
To claim that this is what is advocated by the whole wally world thread (s ) which are somewhat an inside joke to start with seems to speak of a lack of reading on the forum or an intent to " stur the pot " for whatever reason .
Now i freely admit i don't know cl00bie , and i don't know NY laws or culture ( i have been thro NY exactly once and that included some of scenic NYC , but i was driving a semi at the time ) tho a couple of fellas i know state things are much better upstate than down .
With that in mind Ill tell cl00bie that this is not an attack and you are not in trouble at all . If your intent was pure your questions have been answered on the wally world issue . You however will find that outside the eastern or western seaboards guns and the use of same are as a rule considered much more a right both legally and societally than the " privilege " that it seems to be in our denser populated do nothing of substance states near the seas ( see i can do it too lol ). Were i to offer friendly advise i would say that the same question could have been asked with better verbage . I do realize that coming from ME that is some what of Mr Pot , meet MR kettle but then i am one of them illiterate rednecks that lack in all social graces LOL .

In NY you are not allowed to own a pistol until you acquire your permit. So the idea of someone buying a pistol for the first time, walking around Wal-Mart with it, without ever having fired it (buying ammo) seems to me a little dangerous. I have had a restricted permit since 1990 (hunting and target shooting), and am taking training courses, and am putting in weekly range time until I feel I'm qualified to use a firearm in self defense. I will then approach the county judge, armed with my newly acquired certificates and clean record asking him to remove the restrictions and allow me to carry concealed legally.

Am I missing something about the "Wal-Mart experience"?
Yeah, NY is one of the "BAD" states! Not you personally, just their view on guns. In most states in this country, almost all in fact, you may purchase a handgun much easier than in NY. In fact, in NV, you have to qualify with the actual gun you will carry in order to get the permit, which would mean that you would HAVE to buy the gun before qualifying. They record the serial number on the application. You can add more than one gun to your permit, and the permit only shows that make / model of gun, but the state records still have the serial number.

Before " shall Issue " some countys in CO did that . Now that the state mandated shall issue it has gone by the wayside other than somewhere i still have an expired permit that stipulates a mod 60 smith as my ccw lol .
