More evidence to back the 'Bring a gun to a gunfight' saying

This story drives home the old saw about when invited to a gunfight, aleways bring a gun......

From Denver, Colorado, Channel 7 News:
LONE TREE, Colo. -- A 20-year-old man in Lone Tree is recovering from his injuries after he confronted three burglars in his home with a samurai sword and was shot in the leg.

The man is in stable condition at a local hospital. Police have not released his identity, 7NEWS reported.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Department said a woman called 911 just after 12:30 a.m. Monday, saying that her boyfriend was jolted awake by a noise inside the home. The woman said when her boyfriend went to investigate the noise, he saw three masked men rifling through the house, grabbing money and other valuables.

When the masked men fled the house through a side door in the garage, the victim then grabbed a sword and went out the front door to confront them, 7NEWS reported. That is when one of the burglars turned around and fired a single shot at the victim, authorities said.

Peoples' concept of self-defense can be amusing and entertaining. One discussion in particular I recall, I was talking to a friend about the role of a gun(s) to defend his home.

He didn't have a gun and claimed he didn't need one so I asked what he would do if he was awakened in the middle of the night and discovered two men in his house. He said that he'd probably grab a golf club. When I asked how much he practiced self-defense with his golf club, it got really quite and then he changed the subject.

While a sword is a formidable weapon, it wouldn't be my first choice for home defense. I'm not properly trained with one, and I would be limited in narrow hallways and in other crowded areas.

It reminds me of the movie Twilight Samurai where the hero prefers to use his short sword, which offends the renegade samurai he is sent to kill. They begin a swordfight indoors, and the renegade is about to deliver a final blow, but gets his katana stuck in the ceiling. The hero cuts him down.

And of course, there's limited range against opponents who may have something better.

Visualize this----your in Betty's house in the middle of the night, robbing it. You have your arms full of goodies. The lighting is fairly dim. All of a sudden you hear(from very close by) a high pitched yell/scream,(you know the kind that shatter's glass),Betty comes out of nowhere with a white rag tied around her forhead, and she's got her MACE held above her head. You briefly think,***,could this really be? Am I dreamin' ? Gotta get outta here! Not sure if I messed myself but primary concern it to put as much distance between myself and this little women with the HUGE club that is obviously intent in doing me all the harm that she can.Anyway, dropped my gun when heard the blood curdleing yell/scream so better try to make my way back to the street and the safety of my own hood. Looking over my right shoulder, holy crap, the little girl with the big, nasty looking club is right behind me. As I near the street I see my final challenge,to hurdle over that fire plug. Yeooowwww !!! didn't jump quite high enough. So do I go back to retrieve what I left hanging on the fire plug and have to face the little lady with the big club or just keep runnin'. Frig it,I'm outta here !!---------

Bah for home security it's hard to beat a pistol grip short barrel 12g. Not much will make you reassess a situation like 3ft of fire and the deafening boom of a 12g going off indoors.

Well i am glad he wasn't killed, just wounded and he may want to rethink his choice of home defense weapons.I do like his commitment to defend himself.
We have had a similiar incident happen here in my town this past summer, were a Sheriff deputy[that right] while a sleep in his home was broken into [dumb crook] and upon investigating what the noise was in his livinroom, found a intruder[the dumb crook] and proceeded to wrestle with this assilant and forced him out the door and into the yard. The officer won the wrestling match and flag down a passing motorist and told them to call the police, which they did and this genius of a burgular was arrested
Note: the deputy never thought about getting his service pistol and a light to check out what was in his house. Could he have been shot...very,very easily. It was just chance that this intruder was unarmed, that is all.So when you think about it I don't know which one of these was the dumber.

If you don't have a firearm, why would you chase armed intruders outside?? Should have just called 911 and waited in a locked room with his lady.
