Lock-Up-Your-Safety bill killed in Senate Appropriations
Yesterday the Colorado Senate Appropriations Committee heard SB49, the Lock-Up-Your-Safety bill by Sen. Sue Windels (D).
Windels' bill was a disaster, and even she knew it. It would have forced Colorado gun owners to lock up the very firearms they depend upon for self defense.
Democrats realized, however, that putting SB49 on the floor would make many of their relatively "pro-gun" Democrat Senators vulnerable to enormous pressure, and so Windels killed her own bill.
Rocky Mountain Gun Owners did mailings in key Appropriations Committee members' districts to undermine its support. Rather than waste our time on the pro-gun leaders in the committee (Sens. Ted Harvey, Greg Brophy, and Mike Kopp are certified, proven gun rights heroes) we used our ammo where it was most effective. A sniper rifle, instead of a shotgun, if you will.
In committee, Windels quoted the NRA's support for just such a measure.
In fact, Windels missed the mark a bit: in 2000, just after Columbine, the NRA and CSSA fashioned a bill with then-State Rep. Rob Fairbank (R) to do almost the same thing. When compared side-by-side, Fairbank's bill was worse.
This is a classic example of how compromise ("if we don't pass something, the Democrats will pass a bill that's worse") can destroy our constitutional rights, and how it must be opposed, whether it's sponsored by a far-left Democrat or a centrist Republican.
In any event, good job, everyone, for your work.

From the neighboring state of Kansas, I am glad to hear that such a retarded bill like that one never even got off the floor. Hopefully some brain dead politician here won't get the same idea.

"But if they don't exist, how can a man see them?"
"You may think I'm pompous, but actually I'm pedantic... let me explain the difference."
"Carry the battle to them. Don't let them bring it to you. Put them on the defensive and don't ever apologize for anything."
