A friend of mine is in a discussion on another website is looking for info on Dallas's crime rate in relation to Texas's gun laws, and the fact that you technically do not need to have or apply for a concealed weapons permit to carry a concealed weapon down here. (his words)
can any one help me out so I can pass it along to my buddy for his discussion...

The only two states that allow legal CCW without a permit are Vermont and Alaska. Some states do NOT require a permit to open carry, but in order to carry concealed u will need a permit.
USMC rule # 23 of gunfighting: Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everyone you meet.
I am the God fearing, gun toting, flag waving conservative you were warned about!

Well, you can do all sorts of things without the requisite permit..... Doing them legally is an entirely different matter though!

As far as carrying without a permit, that is a half-truth. You can keep a loaded, concealed weapon in your vehicle without a permit, as long as you are not breaking a law other than a class c misdemeanor and are not part of a criminal street gang. The only time you can carry a concealed weapon while not in your car, without a permit, is when you are walking from your business to your car, or your home to your car.
As far as crime rates, the people commiting the crimes aren't the people with permits. TX DPS tracks the number of convictions for CHL permit holders. It is much lower than that of the average populace. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/adminis...Report2005.pdf
As far as crimes deterred by people with guns in TX, there are hundreds of threads on this very board where a armed citizen stopped a thug from commiting a crime. There are also hundreds of threads on this very board where forum members have recommended the BG's move somewhere else as TX is becoming an unhealthy climate for thugs/felons...
ETA: I have heard 3rd hand that Harris County(from several people) and Dallas county(from one person) do not allow a concealed weapon in your vehicle without a permit unless you are traveling through it. I do not know if this is true and haven't bothered to try to varify/debunk it, because it has never mattered to me...
