My campus sits on about 1/4 of a sq mile of city type property, with one road bisecting it for about 1000'. Campus police have 4 BRAND NEW Ford Explorers, and BRAND BRAND NEW Charger, and bikes and everything else, and they can't even stop this from happening 1000' from their front door and what is essentially the middle of the campus. Of course, if you were to park in the parking lot w/o a permit (which is actively patrolled for people without permits at all hours) you would have two cruisers there to write you a ticket. The focus of campus law enforcement seems to be to police the students, rather than protect them. My state's college gun control laws make it impossible to protect yourself... so if I can't count on the "protectors" and I can't protect myself... what is the answer here? Do I need a cop to walk with me 24/7 all over campus?

Oh, one more email from the day before:
Dear Wentworth community,
As you may be aware, a Northeastern student was found dead in her Mission Hill apartment on Tuesday morning, May 20. The incident is currently being investigated by Boston Police. Our thoughts are with the Northeastern community at this time.
As a Wentworth student, your safety is our first concern. We would like to review a couple of tips/strategies for your safety. The following are recommended precautionary measures that should be observed by members of the community:
* Walk in groups and well-lit areas
* Be aware of your surroundings and travel in familiar areas
* Immediately report any suspicious behavior
* Secure doors and windows, as appropriate
* Keep keys easily accessible
* Report security concerns to landlords (examples include safety latches, door locks, light fixtures, etc)
* Be mindful of opening doors for strangers
* Program 911 in cell phone, in case of emergency
* Wentworth Public Safety can be reached at 617-989-4444.
As many students are working at night in labs and studios across campus, we encourage students to apply these above mentioned safety tips as well as maintain strong communications with faculty and staff regarding safety concerns.
In case this isn't national news, the student was murdered with a gun. Mission hills abuts my campus, and is where many of the students live off campus

It is a public university. We have both University Police as well as the local City/County Police who patrol. So we effectively have twice the police presence but in actuality they just come around on Friday/Saturday night to bust parties.
