Carry against universities rules?

At MSU (Michigan State University) a couple weeks ago there were a couple of non-students who came on to the campus there was an altercation or something like that, long story short there were shots fired by the non-students in a parking lot outside of one of the larger dorms. Couple strays hit some cars, and one stray grazed the back of the head of another driver who was in the wrong time/wrong place. This happened right outside a major dorm on a major university. MSU does not allow concealed weapons or any weapons on their campus for that matter. My question is one if you were a student do you carry while on campus while knowing it's against the rules, and two if you're a parent do you encourage your legal permit holding child to carry against the rules or not?

guess ya need to weigh the likelyhood of being in the wrong place/time against MI laws. Tough call, but I think I would not carry a gun .

I don't know what the Michigan state laws regarding carrying on a state campus is, but openly advocating breaking state (and federal) law is not permitted on these boards, so please keep that in mind while replying to this topic. Using the PM function would be handy to express thoughts to RidemCowboy on this subject.

like it or not, if it's against the law, it's not a good idea. I know here in it's a felony to carry on a university's property. Not a good idea. I'd like to see this changed, but it's very unlikely.

In Colorado, you can carry (with a permit of course) on university property ( I personally verified this with the chief of police of CSU), so I always pack. Most other states you can't do this, and its a good way to get expelled.

In keeping with the nanny state mentality, it's especially incumbent upon us to observe all the regulations as we do gun safety rules, especially when we hold permits or FFL's. We can do nothing to jeapordize these hard fought, regained rights, that are viewed by authority as revokable licenses. Fortunately, the school of hard knocks hasn't been posted, yet.

To my understanding and I've checked it out at this point it is legal to carry in MI with a valid permit. My question that I should have worded differently is would you carry against school policy? Knowing that if you were to be caught you would face certain expulsion. Sorry about the misconception. I would not advocate breaking the law and that was not my intention.

Carrying on school propoerty is breaking the law your permit lists scholls as places ou cant carry you wont only be expelled you will go to jail

Thank you for more info, it was my understanding that school referred to public school's not universities or colleges. I'll have to spend more time finding it out. For the sake of argument though please assume that it would be legal in the state, so you would not be breaking any laws, only your school's policy what would you do?

It wasn't directly aimed at you, but any posters wanting to reply to the thread. Regardless of how we feel about the gun laws, we always try to show ourselves as law-abiding people.

As for breaking non-state, non-federal law (like company policy), it's at your own risk. :frown:

Since I started carrying (and reading the great information on this website and others), I've realized that a gun is really just one of many tools needed to protect oneself. A gun by itself is useless if not backed with the awareness and defensive training that should accompany it. I think with those tools, as well as others, we are not defenseless even without a gun.

That said - when I was in college there were some classes that I had to take at night and had to walk quite a ways from my apartment to campus (I didn't have enough money to afford a car.) It would definitely have been a consideration for me as the risk was high enough.


In your hypothetical case - I would carry without much thought. Universities are a breeding ground for predators - of the physical and intellectual type.

Just don't be caught.....dead. There are other defensive options you can utilize w/o breaking any rules (who needs even a misdemeanor for the authority to use when permit renewal time comes around.)

Here is the Law period

Pistol Free Areas

Beginning July 1, 2001, individuals licensed to carry a concealed pistol by Michigan or another state will be prohibited from carrying a concealed pistol in the following areas:

1. Schools or school property but may carry while in a vehicle on school property while dropping off or picking up if a parent or legal guardian

2. Public or private day care center, public or private child caring agency, or public or private child placing agency.

3. Sports arena or stadium

4. A tavern where the primary source of income is the sale of alcoholic liquor by the glass consumed on the premises

5. Any property or facility owned or operated by a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or other place of worship, unless the presiding official allows concealed weapons

6. An entertainment facility that the individual knows or should know has a seating capacity of 2,500 or more

7. A hospital

8. A dormitory or classroom of a community college, college, or university

9. A Casino

10. Premises does not include parking areas of the above places


A pistol is subject to immediate seizure if the CCW permit holder is carrying a pistol in a "pistol free" area. The following penalties may also be imposed:

* First offense: State Civil Infraction, $500 fine, CCW permit suspended 6 months
* Second offense: 90-day misdemeanor, $1000 fine, CCW permit revoked
* Third and subsequent offenses: 4-year felony, $5000 fine, CCW permit revoked

Furthermore, effective March 29, 2001, per Administrative Order 2001-1 of the Michigan Supreme Court:

"Weapons are not permitted in any courtroom, office, or other space used for official court business or by judicial employees unless the chief judge or other person designated by the chief judge has given prior approval consistent with the court’s written policy."
