    Good place to start?

Hey guys, new to the forums.

I am an AVID hunter, and would love to start hunting with a pistol. I have know Idea where to start. From my understanding, I would need a CCW license to use even for hunting, no?

I would also like to start carrying for personal protection reasons. And I have know idea where to start there either. Local/state/federal laws, acquirement, "No carry zones", etc.

I thought this would be the place to ask

    P.S. Luzerne County, Pennsylvania

I'd be very surprised if you needed a CCW to hunt with a handgun, but every state could be different.

I'm sure our PA members will get you off on the right foot though.

Welcome! Check your local hunting regulations for pistol. You won't need a carry permit to hunt game that can legally be taken with pistol. I would also imagine that your hunting pistol/ammo would be different than that for self protection. I may be wrong though. I see no problem with a 44 mag, if you can conceal it on your person---more power to you. In my state, handgun hunting is regulated usually by caliber or barrel length or both. Hunting and carrying concealed are two different animals. No pun intended.

    Thanks Sixto.

There has to be some sort of restriction. I doubt they would let a 12 year old (legal hunting age, in PA) wondering around with a pistol. I guess I could actually check that myself on a few web sites, but I figure someone could elaborate for me.

I see---so it's a trick question now. So you're 12 years old. That might change things a bit.

Firearms - Handguns: A Sportsman’s Firearms permit or a License
to Carry Firearms is required to carry a handgun concealed or in a motor
vehicle. Licenses to Carry Firearms permits are issued by county sheriffs
or the Philadelphia Chief of Police. The License to Carry Firearms only
entitles bowhunters or spotlighters, for instance, to carry firearms that fall
within this classification. County treasurers issue Sportsman’s Firearms
Permits. A person holding a Sportsman’s Firearms Permit may not carry a
loaded handgun in a vehicle, and may not carry a handgun while bowhunting
    or spotlighting.

    No idea what this means.

Lol, no, go back to the first page. I was using 12 years old as an example (since that is the legal hunting age in PA). The next lines(s) down, I said FLIP the numbers. Im 21.
