NY Rigamarole
Well, I took the registration form from my FFL dealer to the permit office. They will process it and send me a "coupon". I then take the "coupon" to the dealer and he'll release my LCP.
The "coupon" takes two weeks to arrive. Sheesh. I'll have to satisfy myself with mousegun porn until I can fondle the real thing.

That's a little strange... what county are you in?
Here in Ulster County, you get the bill of sale from your FFL, take that to the sheriff's office. They then add it to your permit, and give you the infamous "coupon". You then take that coupon back to the FFL and pick up the gun. My last pistol purchase took about 1 hour... the time it took to drive from the FFL to the Sheriff and back again.
The very first purchase is the one that takes the longest. Subsequent purchases all happen same day.
P.S. If you're close to Ulster County, you can visit me at my range, and check out my LCP, whch I love.

Same type deal here in Monroe County. Only you take the bill of sale to the county building. They add it to your permit and give you the "coupon". Head back to the shop, give them the coupon and pick up the gun. I just did it today in under a hour.

Wayne County is about two weeks as well, fill out for an amendment, send it in, wait for Judge to sign, wait for it to come back.
I have a stack of permits, one for each handgun, kinda ridiculous.

Going on 4 months for my firearms id/purchase permit in NJ, and I am a LEO. My background check took less time.

They are slowly replacing the older NYS paper permits. The new one is two laminated cards. The 1st is the actual permit, the 2nd is a list of your licensed handguns. Each time you buy/sell a handgun, the 2nd permit gets amended, and you get a new copy.

Is it true that in Texas you can buy guns at every 7-11?

NO.
Small shops, some Pawn Shops, a few big box national chains.
A mistake many make is thinking they don't need a CHL for one or another activity. Buying a handgun is one thing, legally possessing it (outside of your home or business) is another.
I know the question was asked tongue in cheek, but Texas really isn't the "Wild West" some folks still think it is.
So, I thought I'd clear that one up.

Virginia is.
Who in NJ, NY, MD, MA, et c. is doing anything to get rid of these idiotic regulations? I know it's hard, heck, we're just trying to keep the Northeasterners who've moved to the Commonwealth from doing the same down here.

Here in Nassau County NY (Long Island) You purchase a Purchase Order for $10.00 and It is good for the calander year. Expires 12-31-XX Take PO to Gun shop pick out what you want. He signes the PO and you have 10 days to go with Firearm down to HQ to add to your Permit. Which is made of paper rolled into a typewriter and added to your permit. Remember those? No limit on how many or how often you can purchase a Purchase Order. I asked what happens when you have to many firearms (If that is possible)to bring in for renewal? The PD will come to you for renewal.
