Taste of CA Law enforcement interaction
Yesterday I was on my way home from work driving my wife's Honda Accord. I commute about 22 miles across a mountain canyon river drainage. I was anxious to get home to witness my son's HS graduation. At 4:00 pm I rounded a sharp corner I notice a BIG truck coming and braking into the corner his low bed trailer was in my lane every bit of 3 feet of more. Needless to say, on a narrow canyon road I skidded in to the low bed and nearly totaled the car. I called HP to take a report. I was carrying and 45 ACP was concealed IWB on my belt under shirt. The officer asked for license & registration. I handed him my Dl and CCW upon which I informed him had a loaded gun on me and was licensed to carry it. he asked where the gun was and I informed him it was on my belt under shirt @ 4:00. he asked why I carried. Huh? I said for personal protection. that was the end of the interaction regarding my gun. It seemed like a bit of a strange question but I post it here for a taste of California.

Didn't disarm you, didn't hassle you, and it didn't have an impact on the report. I would say regardless of the question, it was exactly how it was supposed to be handled.
Too bad about the car, though.

Fair enough. I agree with you.

Wow, considering CA and their tough laws on guns, I'm surprised it went easier for you than most stories I hear in states that are far more gun-friendly!
Sounds like it all came out well, other than the accident of course. I hope you are uninjured and glad you are safe!

OMO, but that's how LE should react in a situation such as yours...
Sorry to hear about your going off the road...
glad it was no big deal!
Stay armed...stay safe!

It sounds like more of a taste of individual biases against citizens being able to defend themselves. Folk exist everywhere who don't truly understand the point of self-defense. Why carry? It's as simple as: survival in the face of a host of unknowns.
Your best weapon is your brain. Don't leave home without it.
Thoughts: Justifiable self defense.
Explain: How does
disarming victims
reduce the number of victims?

I understand where you're coming from, but it doesn't sound so bad. He didn't ask further.
Perhaps an officer here can correct me, but I've heard other officers say that they develop a habit toward asking interrogative questions and that they have a hard time turning it off even around family and friends.

Sorry about the accident, good about the LEO encounter. I really don't see a problem with his question, especially when he did not pursue the topic.
Probably just his own curiosity. I've see topics "Why do you carry?" posted on several boards. Why should a LEO be any different?

Police departments are just a collection of individuals. As in any group, there are going to be some in favor of armed citizens and some who aren't.
If this officer didn't approve of armed citizens he certainly did not allow it to influence his handling of the situation. Good job for both of you!

The "question" is a very fair one IMO, and a very non eventful contact overall. Sorry to here about the car, and I'm glad you're able to pass the story on.

I was a former LEO... what most Law Officers forget is they are looking for the same B-Guys that may have just robbed you or raped your wife. We are all victims of the same BG's. As unfair as it might be and many times true
our society gears our right to carry on ones profession and not the person.
Had you had been one of the below instead of John Q there would not have been any question on "Why do you carry" I would hope his short questions were kind and mannerly and not sarcastic in nature.
Eg. Police, Judges, States Attorneys, Politicians, etc.
