    Got my permit

Came yesterday. I am in Fairfax County, VA. Took them 43 days.

Now I have to get a gun.
I have made up my mind: Sig P239 9mm.

CPO's are out of the question as they are impossible to find. I can get a brand new one for $650 +-$80. Or, I can buy used. Any recommendations? If I buy used from someone, what should I look for/avoid? How much should I expect to pay for a used one? Last question...there are quite a few pawn shops here in NoVa...should I avoid those like the plague or just find a "reputable" one?

    Congrats on getting your permit.

If you can afford it, I would get new. If you know someone that you trust that has a used one that would be o.k., but I prefer to buy new.

    Congrats on the permit!

If it can arranged, when I buy used, I prefer to take possession at a gun range so I can try it out.

I wish I could get on a police range, that way I could try it out and have them run the serial at the same time...

For when that's not possible, I look at the feed ramp for nicks, look for signs of mistreatment(i.e. not lubricated, barrel for residue, etc), look for signs of 'bubba smithing', do a safety-function test, and dry-fire when I can. Of course a complete field strip is preferable.

The only reason I check cleanliness, is I figure if they were too lazy to clean and lubricate their firearm prior to selling it, I figure they probably weren't too good about it or didn't know how when the previous owner owned it.
There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always evil.
