I hadn't heard this either...must have been very recent.

My first license was from 2001 to 2006...then my renewal in 2006 was extended until 2011.

Seven years is better than five...but a lifetime permit (like in IN) would certainly be welcomed.

    Gotta' love the GunShine State...

Does the FL CWP still substitute for the NICS? I thought that one of the requirements was that it had to be renewed every 5 years to be eligible for NICS replcaement?

You are correct, so if the FL CWP "did" qualify in lieu or NICS before, it will NOT qualify for future CWPs. A lot of states went to 5-year renewals for that exact reason when NICS went into effect in 1998.

It used to qualify for an exemption, but not anymore. So, the extension of the permit's valid period won't matter in this case. I guess this will apply to newly-issued licenses and renewals, and not be retroactive to current licenses.

First I'd heard of it too.....

My wife finally got her first ccw last month.....I guess she should have waited another few weeks!

The good news is that my renewal just went in. Nice to know I won't have to worry about that again until 2015! Back in 1990 when I got my first one, it was only good for 3 years....then it moved to 5 years and now to 7, so we continue to make progress. Maybe one day we'll follow the lead of Indiana and have a lifetime permit. That'd be nice!

Now in SC we can renew out CWP online so other than the cost it isn't a big deal. I would rather have 4 years and NICS exemption thn 7 years and no exemption but that is just me. Ours is $50 which is less than other states so SC @ $50 and NH @ $20 if SLED will just go ahead and announce reciprocity with the states it is supposed to I will be fine which should be 33-36 states.

I don't know how it was done years ago, but for the last two years I can verify that a FL CWP has not substituted for a NICS check. The benefit of a CWP is that the holder is exempted from the 3 day waiting period. My most recent gun purchases required completion of the ATF Form 4473, and a successful NICS check.

You are very correct. The Florida CWP does not means you are exempt, just dont have to wait for a hand gun.

I just don't buy that many guns in any given year..... I'll wait an extra 5 minutes for the NICS check in exchange for the longer ccw license term.

I did not kow if the FL CPW would suffice for the NICS check or not and is why I was asking. In SC it will so all I have to do is show that and no NCIS check or worry etc. I have never had any problem with it but some dealers are more willing to haggle if you have one because they know that 1) if you decide to buy there is no worry about approval, 2) you are probably more knowledgeable and interested than someone walking in off the street just looking.
