I live in Maine and a class is being offered locally to obtain a Utah CHL permit.

It includes fingerprints, pictures, etc. The instructor is licensed in the state of Utah.

When I complete the class I leave with the license. Because I have a Maine permit, I only need to attend the class for 4 hours to meet the requirements.

    The Class is $200.

I have been told that it will allow me to carry in 30 states.

    Good deal or pass? Reasons?

    Arizona Arkansas Delaware Idaho Indiana
    Kentucky Michigan Minnesota Missouri Montana
Nevada New Mexico Oklahoma Tennessee Vermont
    Wyoming

Now that I have looked at the list, I guess I do not see a need to get the permit. I never travel to any of the states except Arizona once every 5 years.

Any other permits that give you more states?

Good deal because of the reasons you've mentioned. If you can use those states' recognition of Utah permit holders' right to carry, then that's all ye need know.

Oregon + Utah, here. Outside of Colorado and California, it gives me darned near every state west of the eastern edge of Texas. Not a bad trade.

Caution, on those states in which recognition is only for the state of residence. ie, Florida and Colorado won't recognize Utah, for me, 'cause I am an Oregon resident.

Handgunlaw.us will let you create a map showing where you can carry with resident and non-resident permits.

Hey can you share info on that UT-compliant class?

    I'd be interested in that.

On the Handgunlaw.us site there is a list of states and contact sites for non-resident licenses. For the Utah link, there is a link to a list of Utah qualified trainers for each state. Enjoy.

You may want to double-check this ... Utah currently has a 60-day turnaround for permits, and I have never heard of a class actually providing the license on location.

Agreed. Doesn't sound right to me either. Also, Utah has been reviewing their out of state licensing so there could be a chance that they will be harder to come by.

That is simply not true. Utah has to do background checks, process your application just like every other state. You WILL not leave the class with a license. What you will leave the class with is an APPLICATION for your license. You will then need to pay an additional $65 to Utah to process your application, and you should get it within 60 days of send it to them.

The benefits to getting an out of state CHL license is to widen the list of states you may visit and carry you gun.

Also, $200 sounds high. I took my Utah class a couple of weekends ago and it only cost $70. If I had taken it with my TX CHL class, it would only cost $20 addition to my TX CHL class fees.

I took the UT 4 HR class in CT. It was $90 or $100. Shop around. Go to the UT web page and they will give you a list of instructors. I got the class, the application with the instructors stamp on it, the finger prints and the instructions on what to do. We filled out the app right there. Mailed it next morning and had the permit in about 50 days. Good Luck.

Not sure how long you are down here, but jsut so you know, we have Utah classes down here to. I believe that Charles is trying to get one together in Houston in the next couple of weeks. Also, there are instructors in the DFW area as well.

The UT permit is a good deal, but the $200 class, not so much. I am arranging a UT class in my city and the cost will be $50-$75 per student.

I have to agree with the other post. $200 for the Utah class is high, mine was $90. Also Utah only requires 4 hour training it is not due to already having a license. You will have to file your application with Utah, and expect to wait 3 months from date of mailing until you recive the permit

I am not sure of you purpose in this
A concealed carry permit is issued by you
state useually by youe local law enforcement
ie police chief oy sherrif department
the ability to carry a concealed weapon is
    by recerprocity in other states
you will have to use the Maine recerprocity
list of states to see where you can carry concealed
and get a concealed carry permit from maine

ALSO as an instructor here in NC
i can teach only for the NC CCH Class
i cannot teach for any other state
NC requires that the instructor have a valid
concealed carry permit to take the instructor class
that requires thai you be a NC resident
