Scary situation while unarmed

I work at a K-8 school during my summers off from college as an instructor at an art camp, and often wonder about safety issues and schools. We had a problem with a known sex offender hanging out in the park we take the kids to play in at lunch time, yet beyond informing the local police we couldn't do much as it was a public park and it's his right to be there.

I don't have children of my own but the kids I work with are entrusted to me by their parents and you better be damn sure I'd protect them with my life, the head instructor was actually very relieved to have a male on staff because of protection concerns, but everyday I enter the building with the large "Weapons Free Zone" sign and wonder how much protection I can truthfully offer. I'm glad it wasn't serious and people were safe, but it makes you think.
