    anything can happen

Political factors like the "hometown" view cited above can always come into play, regardless of the circumstances of a self-defense shooting. Like P95Carry wrote, save your life if you must and at least you will survive to face whatever consequences ensue.

Here's a recent example of political considerations dragging out the process:

About a year ago in my town, a man with a CWP and a .38 caliber revolver got into a parking lot altercation with both another man and his wife. The root of the disagreement was a door ding---totally stupid. The confrontation escalated to the point where the trio got physical, the second man was beating the first with a pipe. The first guy put 2 rounds each into the man and the wife. The man died after refusing a transfusion, the wife survived.

Police did not arrest the shooter, and the DA did not charge him directly. I think they thought it was justified, but didn't want to publicly state that because there was a race factor involved; plus they were waiting for a statement from the comatose wife, which they eventually got. So the matter was referrred to a grand jury. The shooter twisted in the wind for 6 months; the grand jury ultimately declined to indict.
