    County Fair NOW Posted

To my amazement my county fairgrounds are posted now, Iím thinking this is the first year they have had signs up, as I know for sure they didnít 2 years ago because I carried every day.

They had a sign about being subject to search at anytime and that you were under security camera surveillance as well...

    Lovely....

Now....deep down inside, I'm wondering if it's actually private property, or public property. Well....if the taxpayers are ultimately funding the property or paying real estate taxes on it. Interesting. A real bummer of sorts. You know...some places are just coming around to thinking about this sort of thing---the postings of no weapons, no firearms, no concealed---etc. I wonder if taxpayers paid for that sign? You might check into the 'Washington County Fairgound Inc.' and open a real can of worms there. That is if you were so inclined. May uncover something that's not really 'fair'.

Hey, in Tennessee the fair is in a "park" and is off limits by statute.
The preceding post may contain sarcasm; it's just better that way. However, it is still intended with construction and with the Love of my L-rd Y'shua.

Interestingly, here in Orlando, most of the larger gun shows are held at the fairground......

That stinks. I'm in Smyth County VA and my wife and I were just in Abingdon and saw the sign for the fair. She said it was always great. I've never been and I probably won't go now.

There was a case pending last year in Texas of a school district that made their own non-binding signs by combining the actual binding sign and a school zone sign. Looked real official, but was not in accordance with statutes. This could well be the case here.

Went to the fair last year & it was posted. Also had to go through metal detector.

Gangs are causing big problems here. My question to the officer at the gate was, "what stops them from sliding it under the fence"? He refused to answer...

If the property is owned by the county then they are violating Virginia Law by having said sign.

My question is how can you have private property owned by a COUNTY?

I suppose it could be private property that is leased to the county? It's not unusual for a landlord to post their properties even if the business tenants leasing space have no issue with firearms. The property owner rules in these cases, unfortunately.

And thus the term NPE (non permissive environment)

In MO even if you are discovered carrying in an NPE, it is not a crime, UNLESS you are asked to leave and do not, which would be reeeally dumb.
(With the possible exception of Fed buildings and PDs, I'd have to re-read it)

I'm not advocating ignoring posted signs, just making an observation.

Personally, some signs I ignore, others I do not.
Depends on the potential risk/vs penalties.

    How times have changed!

    I remember...

being a kid at the County Fair watching my (late) Dad shooting 22s at the shooting gallery. When I was old enough to shoot they had changed it to air powered BBs (#2 lead shot) Man that was where I spent all my money!

Oh well enough about having fun at the fair... back to topic:

According to the website, "The Washington County Fairground is a non-profit, non-stock organization", so it is a private company/property, not county or state owned. Therefore, they can post the sign. Now, that sign has no legal meaning in Virginia. In Virginia, you must be asked to leave the property and then refuse in order to be charged with anything, and then it is a trespassing charge, not a weapons charge. On the other hand, it is their property and I would respect their property rights by not carrying. Of course, I would also respect my rights by not attending. No guns = no $$$.
